CLINTON
Charles P. Joyce, 89, died Saturday, February 27, 2021, in St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Boston, after an illness.
Born and raised in Clinton, son of the late Patrick E. and Mary Ellen (O’Toole) Joyce, he was graduate of Clinton High School, Class of 1949, and was voted “Most Talented” member of his graduating class by his peers.
In June, 1949, he enlisted with the US Army, and served during the Korean War as a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, for which he was awarded the Parachute/Glider Badge, and two Bronze Stars. Ever the adventure lover and thrill seeker, Charlie had over 400 parachute jumps under his belt.
A talented writer, he was a contributor to the 82nd Airborne Quarterly, and, upon his Honorable Discharge and return to civilian life, he worked as a journalist for area newspapers. In addition, he was a poet and playwright.
“Clinton’s Norman Rockwell,” as he was affectionately known, was also a gifted artist, who enjoyed drawing and sketching.
Charlie’s funeral will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021, with a Mass at 9:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, at 11:00 a.m. There are no calling hours. In accordance with current guidelines, the use of facemasks and the practice of social distancing will be required at the church and cemetery.
