Charles Kershaw III D.O. Obituary

KERSHAW III, CHARLES H., D.O.
81, passed peacefully at home in Contoocook, NH on December 14, 2017.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island on October 16, 1936, he was the son of the late Charles and Florence (Heightshoe) Kershaw. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School, Brown University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before joining the Air Force, he practiced Family Medicine in Barrington, RI for fifteen years. He was a flight surgeon and commander during his 22 years of military service, retiring as a Colonel.
Chuck was a member of the DeMolay where he served as a Master Counselor and became a member of the Masons.
Chuck grew up sailing at the Hummocks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, racing his Candy Boat in Tiverton Bay, and enjoying fishing. He raised Appaloosa horses on his farm in Rehoboth, MA and was a member of two riding associations. He played guitar and wrote and sang many songs for retiring military servicemen.
Chuck loved spending time with his family and enjoyed his golden retrievers. He was a dedicated family physician and, in his early career, could be seen making house calls in his horse and buggy. He was a kind, caring man, who shared his wonderful sense of humor with his family and friends. His laughter could be heard down the halls of his office and into the hearts of those around him. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Hall) Kershaw of Contoocook, New Hampshire, daughters Cheryl and her husband, Hoke Shirley, of Concord, New Hampshire; Kathryn and her husband, Eric Stillman, of Gulf Breeze, Florida; and Susan and her husband, Jerry Butts, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He adored and dearly loved his eight grandchildren; Kayla, Kristen, Charles, and Connor Shirley; Aubree and Josh Stillman; Jessica Butts, and Jennifer (Butts) Balogh.
Calling hours will be held at Russell J Boyle and Son Funeral Home in Providence, Rhode Island, 331 Smith Street on December 29th, 2017 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Pocasset Hill Cemetery in Tiverton, Rhode Island.

I was very young when I was a patient of his in Barrington, RI. I'm in my 60s now but never forgot Dr. Kershaw and his free ice cream coupons turned in at the West Barrington drugstore. He made an impression on all of us. Gone but not forgotten.

Dr. Kershaws father brought me into the world and was my doctor until I married. He and Florence were very good friends of my mother and father. Frank and Vera Bidden. As I child I can remember playing with Chucky at his house and at the Hummocks.
I remember falling down the stair, and somehow landing on my head wedged somehow upside down and Chucky having to find his mother and mine to rescue me. Later when I lived in Seekonk we went to him as our physician for a short time until we moved again.
Life takes us many routes and today visiting with a friend from college I saw in his daughters alumni magazine of the notice of Dr Kershaws death. Please accept my condolences on your loss. I know he was a wonderful man and father.

I will never forget Dr. Kershaw. He was our family doctor until he joined the Air Force. He was the most patient man I ever knew, putting up with me and my 4 children. I have thought of him many times over the years and have never found another Dr. like him. RIP Dr. Kershaw. There will never be another one like you. My condolences to Mrs. Kershaw and all his family.

Mrs. Kershaw, Cheryl, Kathryn, Sue - I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Kershaw's passing. What can I say? For so much of my young life the "Kershaws" were my 2nd family! I have many wonderful memories - the farm & horses; sleep overs; color tv; Pepper! - not to mention the kindness & caring - stitches when I fell off my bike! Dr. Kershaw was always happy and had a laugh to warm your heart. He truly made a difference, giving unselfishly to others. A great man for sure. I wish you all comfort during this most difficult time.

A lifelong friend - Marlene
