Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Charles Earl O’Rourke passed away on January 22, 2024 at the age of 92. Beloved husband of the late JoAnne (Wright) O’Rourke, dear father of Jane (Mark) Walsma, Bob (Tina), Andy (Robbie) and Tim (Norma) O’Rourke. He leaves behind six grandchildren (Mark Jr, Kelly, Kim, Amy, Matthew and Jennifer) and fourteen great grandchildren.

Born in Desoto, Missouri, his family moved to Mexico, Missouri. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served as a radio mechanic and instructor during the Korean War while stationed in Nagoya, Japan. After the war, he attended the University of Missouri and majored in Business Administration and became a lifelong MU Tiger fan.

He met JoAnne, the love of his life in Mexico when a friend arranged a blind date. The couple exchanged wedding vows 6 months later and were very happily married for over 63 years.

Charlie was passionate about every aspect of his work and had a very successful career in manufacturing as he climbed the corporate ladder with Westinghouse, Carter Carburetor/Automotive, Alco Controls and AO Smith Water Products.

His other passions included his wife and family, playing golf, traveling, Cardinals baseball and playing bridge. Post-retirement, he developed an interest in the culinary arts. He made his own bread, canned jellies, managed a vegetable garden and, of course, became known for baking legendary Key Lime pies. He taught bridge and led a senior stretch class in both Hartsville, South Carolina and in St. Louis.

Charlie lived his life to the fullest and was well known for his generosity, kind nature and quick wit. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

There will be a graveside service followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon in Mexico, Missouri on February 24th. Details to follow.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (http://act.alz.org/goto/MemoryKeepersJane) or the American Cancer Society.

Not sure what to say?

Charlie was a longtime friend of Ted and I. We met in Canada in 1969 when he and Joanne were next door neighbours in Mississauag - Charlie came to Canada to work for a few years. We maintained our connection for over 50 years. He never forgot my birthday which is also December 14. Flowers would be delivered to my address and we would have a chat that day. We visited Missouri, Tennessee and South Carolina over the years as our families grew up. We will miss his infectious laugh and great...

Our love and deepest sympathy extend to all the family. Bill and I will treasure our last conversation with Charlie when we wished him a Happy 92nd Birthday. Charlie will be missed. We loved his sense of humor; respected him at the Bridge table and Bill enjoyed playing golf with him.

We knew Charlie and JoAnne in Hartsville where we were friends for many years. When we moved to Singapore, they traveled halfway around the world for a visit. We cherish those special memories...

Sending sincerest sympathy to the O'Rourke family. My brothers Jack and Robin were good friends with Jane and the the boys in Lafayette and my parents were fond of Charlie and Joanne. Lots of sweet memories of their time in Lafayette.

I met Charlie in 1992 when I went to work at A.O Smith McBee. Charlie was unlike any other plant manager that has been with our company in McBee. Charlie was a great person and took time out of everyday to go out to the shop floor and talk with people. He wanted to know people and he loved them. In return we respected him. He knew everyone by first name. He is often talked about til this day. I have now been with AO Smith for 33 years and Charlie’s style of management is a thing of the past....

To the entire O’Rourke:
We did love and respect Charlie. We have many fond memories by that we will forever cherish.
We are lifting prayers for this family. May you find comfort and peace during this very difficult time.

Mr. Charlie seemed bigger than life to me as a young teenager fifty years ago when you all lived in Lafayette, TN. It was a special treat when Miss JoAnn would ask me to stay for dinner as it was always a fun experience bordering on an adventure. Mr. Charlie would arrive home from work in a shirt and tie and l swear l thought he looked ten feet tall walking into the house. I'm sure it helped his stature that Miss JoAnn was so petite and we kids all had a lot more growing up to do. I also...

Charlie was a great man and a dear friend. He was brilliant with common sense. (so rare). An amazing leader and effective manager. I had many occasions to interact with the people in his life in Hartsville. Everyone loved him whether the plant, the club or the church. Charlie was a wonderful husband, father and friend. Vera and I will miss Joanne and Charlie forever. Best of all he could putt.

Loved meeting and knowing Charlie, A true Gentleman!

In memory of Charles Earl O'Rourke.
