Carlo and I became friends after I found his request for photocopying lying in a dossier in the French National Archives. We researched and wrote about similar subjects, and developed a friendly and amusing email relationship that lasted for several years. I had the good fortune to meet him in person at his home twice and enjoyed his good company. I am sad to learn of his passing and will miss his warmth and good humor.
