Deacon Charles Murry Rogers, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather was born on March 23, 1931, in Decatur to the late Willie and Annie Thatch Rogers. He departed this life peacefully at his residence on April 7, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

He graduated from Lakeside High School, Decatur, and Alabama A&M University, Huntsville. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a teacher in the Decatur City School system, a member of AEA, director of the Boys and Girls Club, local writer and publisher of the book "Somebody Had to Say It" and cookbook, "Everybody's Cookbook," community historian and was active in many church and community activities.

He was a member and a deacon of First Missionary Baptist Church and had served in numerous capacities in several auxiliaries of the church.

Among those who Charles is now eternally reunited with are his parents and five siblings, Willie, Felix, Ada, Everet and Deloris.

Those who he leaves awaiting their glorious reunion with him are a loving and devoted wife, Georgia Neal Rogers; four children, Eugene Rogers (Jeanette), Rochester Hills, MI, Karina Walker, Hillsboro, Carletta Cullen (Earnest), Birmingham, Karle Rogers (Jan), Decatur; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be noon Saturday, April 12, 2014 at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverend Madison Brown officiating and the Reverend Herbert Cartwright, host pastor. Inhumation with Military Honors will follow in Sterrs Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to the funeral. Public viewing will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home.

I'm sorry for your loss. I remember as a child Mr. Rogers would always give me a pack of Mentos when I attended First Missionary Baptist Church. Good memories. Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

May God bless and keep you during this time of sorrow. Mr. Rogers was a great teacher who will be remembered by all who learned so much from him during our years at Lakeside. Look to God for strength during this time of loss.
