Charles Rumpelt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 30, 2017.
Charles Newcomb Rumpelt, of Jericho, N.Y. and Ocean Beach, Fire Island, born July 3, 1925 passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 29 Surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Brooklyn Heights, he attended Stony Brook Prep School in 1941 prior to attending Lafayette College. Drafted into the Army in 1943, Charles served in the 113th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during WWII. He was a decorated WWII veteran having received the Purple Heart. He returned after the war and continued his education at New York University, where he graduated with a degree in Economics. On November 19, 1948 Charles married Katherine "Cookie" Kates who was an Army Cadet Nurse. His loving wife, Katherine predeceased him in 1990. Charles and Katherine resided in Jericho where they raised 6 children. He was a dedicated father and took great pleasure in sharing his love of sports and nature with his children. He coached their teams, took them fishing, boating and skiing and brought them to hockey & baseball games. He was a fixture on Fire Island and a lifelong summer resident of Ocean Beach. He was passionate about fishing and always seemed to "hook the one that got away". He loved playing beach volleyball, and sitting on the beach in the late afternoon. He was an avid Brooklyn Dodger and Yankee baseball fan. Charles was a great historian and an avid storyteller. His memory was impressive until his last day. He "thought" he could fix anything and everything- and was famous for his repurposing- nothing went to waste. He was endearing to some and had a fun quirkiness to others. Many who met him would describe him as a "character". He was an animal & nature lover and enjoyed the companionship of the many dogs & cats throughout his lifetime. Charles is survived by his 6 children: Winifred Rogers, Frye Island, Maine; Katherine Rumpelt, Syosset, NY; Louise & Michael Esposito, Syosset, NY; Caroline Fanelli, Katonah, NY; Charles Rumpelt Jr., Babylon, NY; Andrew Rumpelt, Albany, NY; and 10 grandchildren & three great grandchildren.

In loving memory of Charlie will say a prayer for you and your family, and wishing you eternal peace and hapiness now and forever. Thanks for your sacrifices during WW-II in keeping us all safe in this country too, and we will never forget what you and other veterans did to protect this county and will always love you for it.

Charlie and family, I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I will remember him fondly with all his quirks and love of fishing and his dogs. His crazy do it yourself watering system and the day I helped him rescue a bird caught in wiring on his deck. His many chain saws and collection of free (ant infested) firewood. His nightly baked potato. And so many more memories... My deepest sympathies.

Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. Glad I had the chance to meet him. All the Bassett hounds in heaven now have a great friend to take them for their daily walks.

Wini, Cathy, Louise, Caroline, Charlie and Andrew, I am sorry. Your dad loved and enjoyed you all completely. I will pray for the repose of his soul and for all of you.

Three memories jump into mind of your dad. Lots of time snapper fishing. He spent most time baiting hooks and untangleing the lines.
Infinate catches when "Dewy" was only four years old.
Your dad was always on the move. When he saw me he'd ask me a question,I'd answer, he'd look surprised, brighten his eyes and smile as if to say, "really"? Then turn away shaking his head. I laugh thinking about the regularity of this reaction.
God Bless and love to you all,
Christy (East Islip, NY)
