Charles Schroeder Obituary

Charles Schroeder
February 25, 1933 - November 17, 2021
Hurst, Texas - Charles Schroeder, aged 88, passed away November 17, 2021. Charles was born in Dougherty, Oklahoma on February 25, 1933. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City and served with the Army in Germany during the Korean war. He met his wife Marilyn in Oklahoma City and they married on July 18, 1958. Moving to Texas in 1963, Charles worked with the FAA until he retired in 1994. They raised three daughters. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Hurst, and served in almost every volunteer capacity there.
A man of exceptional wisdom and wit, he had a gruff exterior that hid his generous spirit. He pretended to be Scrooge, but was actually Santa Claus. He loved having the family all together sharing stories and memories with lots of laughter.
Charles's favorite game with his grandchildren was to jump out and scare them unexpectedly, and he introduced them all to horror movies far too young. He was generous to a fault and opened his home to many over the years who needed a place to live. The entire family knows the answer to his riddle "If a hen and a half lays an egg and a half" but we still don't know how to arrive at the answer. He worked crossword puzzles daily until the day he died. Once he chased, captured and disposed of a rat and never lost his toothpick. His favorite response to "What are you doing?" was "Just killing time till I die." His favorite answer to "How are you doing?" was "I don't know. Have you heard something?" or alternatively, "Just another day in paradise." Charles told his daughters many times over the past year that he has lived a wonderful life and done everything that he wanted to do.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn. He is survived by three daughters, two sons-in-law, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends. Graveside service will be on Wednesday, December 22 at 11:00am at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to First Baptist Church Hurst, Mature Adult Ministry.

It was a pleasure to have known Charles. I first met him when he taught the singles group at Hurst Baptist Church some 30+ years ago. I have kept in touch with Charles over the years by stopping by his house and talking with him several times a year. The last time was around October 2021. I so enjoyed our visits. His humor was unique. I stopped by on 1/31/2022 of course he was not home. The thought occurred that he might be visiting Marilyn. May the grace and peace of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ be with those who miss and loved him.
