I knew Chuck back in the "dark ages" when we were graduate students at UVA. Truly a fine individual.

Easily the best professor I had in my four years (75-79) at Lynchburg College.

Other than during class hours I had many encounters with Chuck, though I never called him Chuck but Mr. Shull. Once we even ran into each other in the bowels of the New York subway system beneath Times Square. And then there was the time he was brave enough or maybe he had the foresight to let me provide one of his classes with a lecture about the music business and how it related to Human Sexual Behavior. I tried to keep in touch by sending postcards from around the World and we had a few...

My name is Thomas Caine, a junior at Lynchburg College. I had Dr. Shull's cultural anthropology class 2nd semester freshman year. However, the class was at 8:30am and I was unable to stay awake for class. Dr. Shull was cool enough to let me show up after class for a recap on what happened during class because he understood how difficult his class was at 8:30am. I was going to have him for intro to sociology around 11am and I planned to make up a semester's worth of sleeping during class up...

I am so very sad to learn that Chuck has died. I count him among the greatest blessings in my life. As a student and young adult at Lynchburg College, Chuck helped me, with love and compassion, through some of the most challenging transitions in my life. He was an anchor for me at LC as a student and later when I worked as an administrator there. I smile when I think of the number of students who were so fortunate to have had Chuck in their lives -- and there are many of us. The sweetest...

Ann,
I'd like you to know how much Chuck means to so many LC students. An excellent teacher, thoughtful adviser and even better person. His friendship is one of the most important things to come from my time at school.
I consider myself enormously lucky to have spent time with him.
Best,

My last year at Lynchburg College back in 1978, I took his into class just to fill out my schedule. To this day I can remember many of the things he taught and often think of them. He also had subtle facial expressions that were quite humorous. Sorry to hear the news.
