Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, Inc. Obituary

The Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, Inc., announces with the deepest sympathy the transition of Mr. Charles Lewis Smith.

Charles Lewis Smith was born on July 12, 1956, in Monroeville, Alabama. He departed this life on August 31, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pauline Robinson Smith and the Rev. Calvin Lewis Smith.

Having confessed Christ at an early age, Charles was a longtime, dedicated member of the historic Saint Louis Street Missionary Baptist Church where he was also a Trustee, a Sunday School teacher, and Chairman of the Deacons’ Board.

Charles attended public schools in Mobile Alabama: Caldwell Elementary School, Craighead Middle School, George Hall Middle School, and Murphy High School. He received an Associate’s Degree from Bishop College, a B.A. from the University of South Alabama, and an Ed.S Degree in Educational Administration from Alabama State University.

Charles was a career educator in the Mobile County School System: a coach at Williamson High School; an assistant principal at LeFlore High School; a principal at Scarborough Middle High School; an assistant principal at Denton Middle High School; and a high school science teacher at Pointe Academy, LLC. Gifted as a teacher, he received the Teacher of the Year Award multiple times. Fervently concerned about the growth and development of children, he was also an Educational Coordinator at the Strickland Youth Center (Mobile, Alabama). Always concerned about the safety and well-being of his community, moreover, Charles was also a deputy in the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department and a Monitor at Keeton Corrections (Spanish Fort, Alabama).

Charles was also active in fraternal and youth-advocacy organizations. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Actively involved in the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama, he was also employed by the organization as an administrator and a teacher.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Dailey Smith; five children (Chassity Smith; Ciera Smith Boglin; Lonnie Dailey; Tiana Smith; and Jamaya Smith); seven grandchildren (Malakhai Mickles; Marquez Champion; Chance Champion; Ciane Moore, Christiana Boglin; Cadence Boglin; and Ny-omi Dailey); one sister, Mattie A. Smith; three brothers (Jeffrie R. Robinson; George R. Smith; and the Rev. Abraham Smith); one aunt, Artherene Robinson; five sisters-in-law (Selina Robinson; Bridget Smith; Shannon Dailey; Jemille Williams; and Regina Dailey); three brothers-in-law (Bryan Dailey; Brandon Williams; and Willie Williams); one son-in-law, Christopher Boglin; a father-in-law (Herbert Davis); a godmother, Mary Muggins; two longtime friends, Eddie Howell and Marcus Moore; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Not sure what to say?

Best principal hands down at Scarborough middle school. You will deeply be missed and loved

It broke my heart when my friend told me you had pass. He was a great teacher. He was a over all great guy. He always had his students laughing. He definitely gone too soon. But to be absent in the body is being in the present of the Lord.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Honored to have had him as my principal and boss. Rest in Peace.

See you on the other side Charlie❤

Life Is But A Stopping Place Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what's to be, A resting place along the road, to sweet eternity. We all have different journeys. Different paths along the way, We all were meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay... Our destination is a place, Far greater than we know. For some the journey's quicker, For some the journey's slow. And when the journey finally ends, We'll claim a great reward, And find an everlasting...
