Charles Swart, 81, of San Marcos passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012, at his residence in San Marcos, Texas. Mr. Swart was born in Tom Green County, Texas to Lela Mae Vann Swart and William Clark Swart; and grew up in Christoval, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He entered the U.S. Navy as an officer and served in the Seabees during the Korean War, stationed at Subic Bay in the Philippines. He married Virginia Ann Swart in 1957 while attending UC Berkeley for his Master's degree. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Quincy, California, and then moved to Bozeman, Montana where he taught in the Montana State College engineering department for five years. During that period, he was the founding president of the Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors (MARLS). In 1963, he started a land surveying business that continued until 2010 in Montana and Texas. He and Ann have three daughters: Deborah (John Kuehne), currently at the MacDonald Observatory; and Margaret (Tony Zweig) and Victoria, both of San Francisco. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister-in-law Camille Swart. He is survived by his wife and daughters; his grandchildren David, Alexandra, and Johanna Kuehne; his brother Bill Swart of Houston, and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos with Rev. Ed Kuny officiating. Burial will follow at San Marcos City Cemetery.
