Charles was the most elegant, gracious, generous gentleman I knew at Reed College. He was a fount of knowledge and I will be forever grateful that he welcomed me into his course in Chinese Theatre. As a fellow faculty member, I learned so much not only about Chinese theatre but also about skillful teaching of Reedies. I will never forget our visit to LanSu Garden, where he showed us where the lovers in the beautiful opera whose name I have forgotten would have met. He found a Chinese name for...

Charles was a quiet, honorable man who told the truth when he spoke. He was one of the memorable people I met at Reedwood.

Dear Diane,
It's Carolyn Savage from Portland. We are all so sad to hear we have lost Charles. He was a man of his time. He witnessed and lived SO much history in his lifetime. He loved his country, but he also loved his adopted country and did so much to enrich our understanding of the Chinese culture. Portland embraced him and you too. I'd say you were the toast of the town at one time! It was a great loss when you moved away. We've missed you all so much. Thank you for...

Charles Wu was such a gentle, elegant soul. My husband John and I would have long phone conversations with him regularly and talked about everything. Charles was very generous with sharing his vast knowledge with us. We had wonderful times together.
We shall miss him. Rest in peace Charles.

It was my great pleasure to assist Dr. Wu with his book "Listen to the Fragrance." A true scholar gentleman in the finest Chinese tradition. And I am extremely grateful to him for introducing me to my Chinese calligraphy/painting teacher Wang Gongyi.

It was my pleasure to work with Prof. Charles Wu at Reed College. He was a charming, polite and friendly gentleman, who graciously served on many HSS senior orals boards. After his retirement, I could count on his participation, often at the last moment. I send my sympathies to his family.
