Bradley's Funeral Home & Crematory - Marion Obituary

MARION, VA

Charlie Jackson Carlton, age 72, passed away on Thursday, June19, 2025 at his home in Marion, VA.

Charlie was born in Lebanon, VA to the late Donald Carlton and Clara Hamilton Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Connie Bee, and several aunts and uncles. A graduate of Chilhowie High School, Charlie was an accomplished athlete, proudly playing football for the Warriors. He went on to serve his country as a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, dedicating himself fully to his military duties. Following his service, Charlie worked for the Department of Corrections in Staunton, retiring with distinction as a drill sergeant after 25 years of faithful service.

An avid outdoorsman, Charlie especially loved hunting and spending peaceful days fishing at the pond on his property, moments made even better when shared with family, friends, and his beloved pets, Socks and Roxy. A true classic car enthusiast, he took great joy in cruising the countryside in his red Corvette on sunny Sunday afternoons. Above all, Charlie will be remembered as an honest, humble, and kind-hearted man, whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by one daughter; two grandchildren; sisters Mellissa “Janie” Grice and Kimberly Johnson and & husband Kecil, whom Charlie considered as a brother; nieces Mellissa “Missy” Lilly & husband Jonah, Ashly Johnson, Kelly Hamm & husband Clinton; nephews Travis Johnson & Jason Johnson; several great nieces and great nephews to include special great niece Aubree Hamm; and many close special friends and coworkers that stayed in touch over the years.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30PM, Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Temple Hill Memorial Gardens in Castlewood. Full military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army National Guard Honors Team. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. The Carlton Family.

We were saddened to hear of Charlie’s passing. Sending our heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time. Sending prayers up for healing and comfort.

Carlton worked for me at Stafford Correctional facility for many years. He was a friend and a colleague. He spoke often of his family and his love of his home place and SOCKS is dog who left some years ago. Deepest sympathy from all of us in Stafford who worked and new him well.

Charlie happened to be one of my favorite cousins on my daddy's side never knew him as Charlie he was always Jackie and I guess it always will be. He was a big-hearted fella always smiling. I can sit with him and listen to the stories he will tell and some he wouldn't want me to repeat LOL but that was Jackie! But he will be truly missed as much as his mom who was my favorite aunt just goes to show you how fast time slip away. I'll miss you cousin Jackie!!! But I will never forget you!!!
