Not sure what to say?

Dear Mary,
I hope you remember me from Edison where I was the secretary. ThenI taught at Roosevelt until 2001. I was able to take a sabbatical in 1994 to earn as Masters in Curriculum at Portland State. It was there that I took every class Chet taught. He was a wonderful teacher who had a great influence on the classes/curriculum I created. But he also informed our way of seeing the world with an eye to the future. I thought of him upon hearing of the recent death of Eugene author...

Dear Mary,
I just found out that Chet passed away about a year ago. I must have been out of town when the obit ran in Eugene. I so appreciated how you and Chet brought grad students into your home and treated us so kindly. Of course, Chet had a big impact on my professional life, and I enjoyed a full and rich career as a professor after studying with him. I have retired now, and I am enjoying the time with my grandchildren (8 of them!) as well as traveling. I don't miss the field of formal...

Dear Mary, as your neighbor in Carmel with whom you share a common fence, love of family, flowers and Nature, I also share your sense of loss and grief over Chet's passing. He was a gentle, wildly intelligent and steadfast man. Although I understood the core of his concern about the loss of cultural commons, he took the subject to heights far beyond my understanding. Despite his vast intellect, he was a down to earth human being, humble about his achievements and modest in his way of life....

Mary Katherine, I was so sorry to hear of Chet's passing. You and I met here in Vermont, when Chet came to speak at a conference at Goddard, and I enjoyed visiting you and Chet in your home years ago. He has been such an influence on my thinking - he was truly an "original" - a courageous thinker, not afraid of truth telling. I shall always remember him fondly, and value all that he taught me. All the best to you and your family,

Many happy memories of Chet when we were growing up in Maplewood, and at Tigard High. A number of great chess games, always with a huge bowl of popcorn. In my deepest sympathies Mary, he was one of a kind.

I was saddened to learn of the loss of Chet Bowers. He was and always has remained a favorite professor of mine during my PhD work in the 70s. My condolences to Mary (with whom I taught for a year) and all the family.

Very sorry to hear of Chet's passing. My sincerest condolences to Mary, Elizabeth, and Ann. I have fond memories of informative discussions with Chet and crewing for him in his 505. He embodied physical and intellectual strength, independence, dedication, and integrity.

My sincere condolences to you, Mary, and your family. I was lucky to know the boys from Maplewood.
