Off the Mountaintop
Christian Wemmers moved from Ahrensburg, a town outside Hamburg, Germany, to Jackson, Mich., when he was a 16-year-old exchange student, and he never went back for long.

"When he was a little boy, he already knew that one day he wanted to live in California because of the sunny climate," said Sibylle Dircks, his sister, in an e-mail message from Germany. "He always enjoyed the American way of life, the friendly, polite people, who were so different to Germans."

Mr. Wemmers, 42, lived in San Francisco and worked as director of product management for Callixa, a software company. He was at the World Trade Center for a trade show on Sept. 11.

A friend, Rebecca Cleff, recalled that he loved San Francisco because "he could go for a 10-mile hike through the forest, over hills and to the ocean during the day, and then a great restaurant and show in the evening."

Ms. Cleff remembers how he told another friend that if he had to die, he'd prefer to just go to the top of a mountain and disappear. "Chris vanished on top of an urban mountain," she wrote in an e-mail message, "an incredible metaphoric combination of his favorite places."

Not sure what to say?

I learned of your death long after it occurred. I am not sure how I found out now. I remember you from High School when you were an exchange student at Parkside High School. You were kindly softer spoken and had a warm slightly mischievous sense of humor...I remember the classes and outings after the football games, one in particular...and although you moved quickly through my days there in High School when we were both so young with our futures innocently bright ahead...although our...

You are in my heart my friend.

Thinking of you, my friend, on this day and hope that you are at peace.

Chris, you and your family are in my thoughts and heart today. You were such an important friend, roommate, and classmate at Stetson.

Chris I was the same age as you were on that terrible day. Know that you will never be forgotten. All the best, Chris, to your family and friend with much regards

Chris and I crossed paths at Strategic Mapping in the mid-90s. I enjoyed encountering his gentle, open grace in the break room or outside one of our cubicles. Yesterday, I cried when I found his spirit memorialized with his name on a wall at the George W. Bush Presidential Center at SMU in Texas, and was able to share my admiration for him with others there. I am honored to carry his memory with me and offer my love and condolences to friends and family.

Chris, may u continue to Rest In Peace on this day and always.

Not forgotten

Here I am again, thinking of you Chris Wemmers and our years together at Stetson. Your memory lives on in my heart and I will continue to check in when moved to do so. I found a photo of you in my glove box a while ago, I must have taken it out to share with someone and now I don't know where I put it ~ typical right? When I find it I will try to post it. Much love to your family and loved ones
