His Big Moment Came to Be
Just for a moment, Christopher Stewart Gray lived his greatest dream. He became a professional football player ‹ a strong-armed quarterback no less ‹ for the Miami Dolphins, the team he rooted and raved for while growing up in New Jersey. His big moment came in 1992, when the team offered him, a former University of West Virginia quarterback, a free agent contract.

The moment lasted only a month, but Mr. Gray, 32, took the lessons he learned all the way to Wall Street, where he became a foreign exchange broker for Cantor Fitzgerald. Work hard, he believed, and anything is possible.

"Chris was a goal setter," said his father, Jim Gray, recalling how his son declared that he would one day play for the Dolphins while watching them in the Orange Bowl when he was six. "He wanted a shot and he got it. When it was over, he wanted to have a good job and he got it. And he even found a beautiful young woman to be his wife."

Mr. Gray and his fiancée were to be married in May. His father says he grows weak just thinking of the family his son might have had. But he manages to fight back the tears, remembering all the goals his son did reach. "He truly lived his life. We were lucky we had him for 32 years."

Not sure what to say?

Happy Birthday in heaven my friend !!!

Hi Jessica, Janet Gray, Chris's mom, would be happy to help you with the project. Let me know and I can put you in touch with her. That said, there are a number of articles written about Chris Gray, one in the Asbury Park Press last year, about his WVU scholarship fund. And a number of WVU articles all searchable. You will learn he was a true legend, not just as a quarterback, but also as a warm, funny and charismatic son, friend, colleague in any community he touched. Best of luck on your...

My 7th grader son is doing a project on the 9/11 victims. And he has to pick out a name starting with his First letter of his last name and find an individual to write about. As I was reading your name popped up and seeing that you were playing as a QB might catch interest for his project. So he will have the honors to write a paragraph about you. Sending condolences to the family. As this month is such a hard month for you. Prayers sent.

It doesn't get easier each 9/11 anniversary. Charlotte, your niece, told me last night that she wishes that she met you. She's 9 now. Thomas, your 13 year-old nephew, looks up articles and videos of you playing football. He aspires to be like you and throw the football like you. Thomas put together an iPad montage which includes lots of photos of you and then switches to him, where it sounds like the voiceover is telling him to just be himself. With that, I know you are watching over them....

I only knew Chris from a far. In 1987 I was on the opposite side of the football field when we played him. I went to Howell High School and I was a sophomore I was 2nd string QB behind Derek Dee. It was a night game and I remember the ROCKET ARM he had. I remember that he was tall and I said to myself that kid is definitely going pro. I didn´t play in that game so I got to watch him play up close. Today is December 23 2022 and my brother and I were talking about QB´s while we were watching...

Thinking of you today, every day and praying for the Gray family who miss you so much xoxo
