Didn't know him personally, but he was a fabulous scholar whose research has been so helpful to me in my pursuits. Mighty sad for me to be searching for one of his articles online, and instead find his obituary. May he rest in peace.

I feel extremely sad to have lost an exceptional friend, colleague and historian. My most sincere condolences to his family.

I met Chris last year when he came to South Carolina to take part in a collaborative project on the "Crisis of the 1860s" in the US, Latin America, and Europe. No one took greater interest or joy in this collaborative enterprise. He made several suggestions that improved my introduction to the book that came out of our conference. We were going to meet in Paris and I was so looking forward to seeing him again. I'm so sad to think of this brilliant and energetic young historian suddenly gone....

A dear friend who always smiled and enjoyed life, and who will be missed by all who knew him. May his daughter have all the protection and care she needs.
