Anderson Funeral Home Crematory - DeKalb Obituary

Clara Ruth Briles, 91, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011, under the tender care of the DeKalb County Hospice at the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, DeKalb.

Born Nov. 9, 1919, in Riverside, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, Ruth was the daughter of Robert Pierce and Ida (Hightower) Wilson. She married Worthie Elwood Briles on June 6, 1941, in Austin, Texas, while the two of them were attending the University of Texas. Later that summer, Ruth and Elwood received their Bachelors of Arts in zoology from UT; they then went to the University of Wisconsin at Madison to begin work on their advanced degrees. However, those efforts were put aside so that Elwood could serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

Following World War II and the births of their first two children (Susan and David), Ruth and Elwood returned to Madison where they received their advanced degrees in immunogenetics in 1948 (Ruth: M.S., Elwood: Ph.D.). The family then moved to College Station, Texas, where Elwood was a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department at Texas A&M and where their younger daughter Sara was born. After the family moved to DeKalb in 1957, Ruth worked with Elwood at the DeKalb Agricultural Association as a research associate in Immunogenetics Research from 1958 through 1968.

From 1968 through 1970, Ruth was an instructor in Biological Sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
From 1970 through 2000, Ruth again worked with Elwood, this time as a Research Associate for Immunogenetics Research in the Biology Department at NIU. On Oct. 9, 2004, Elwood and Ruth were recognized for their contributions to avian genetics by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Ruth was active in the American Association of University Women, volunteered at the Ellwood House, and served for several years as the superintendent of the Sunday school at the First Congregational Church in DeKalb.

She is survived by her husband, Elwood; children, Susan Marie Kniebes (Duane Kniebes) of Boulder, Colo., David Elwood Briles (Marilyn Crain) of Birmingham, Ala., and Sara Briles (Richard Briles Moriarty) of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Dustin Lincoln Briles Moriarty (Dana Churness) of Herbster, Wis., Rachel Florence Briles (fiancé, Duy Hoang) of Austin, Texas, and Travis Crain Briles of Boulder, Colo.; step-grandchildren, Linda (Kniebes) Kozak and Carrie (Kniebes) Swift (Steve) of Lisle and Van Kniebes of Boulder, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Wylder Lee and Olin Elwood Moriarty of Herbster, Wis.; and numerous nephews and nieces and great-nieces and -nephews, including especially nephews Jesse Rodman Wilson Jr. (Cathy) of Cold Springs, Nev., Hal Cochran (Claudia) of West Covina, Calif., Dale Cochran (Jacqueline) of San Clemente, Calif., and Roy Krebs (Thérèse) of Alexandria, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Robert Pierce Wilson II, Travis Hudson Wilson I, Ida Gertrude Krebs, Charlotte Josephine Cochran, Sarah Elizabeth Quinlan and Jesse Rodman Wilson Sr.; and her brothers-in-law, Connally Oran Briles, Van Gordon Briles, and Jack David Briles.

A memorial service will be held in the Hearthside Room in the Visitors' Center of the Ellwood House, 509 W. First St., DeKalb, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 5.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the DeKalb County Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, 2600 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, IL 60115, or DeKalb County Hospice, 2727 Sycamore Road, Suite 1B, DeKalb, IL 60115. The family wishes to thank both organizations for the professional and extremely kind care that they provided Ruth in her last months and days.

Not sure what to say?

Ruth Briles was a most remarkable woman. She pursued science during a period when few women did. She managed, in an era with far fewer conveniences than we have today, to keep a household, raise three children and do science all at the same time. She was insightful, dedicated and hard working. She was a gracious, generous and strong member of the Elwood and Ruth team that is recognized the world over for contributions in avian immunogenetics.

Ruth was such a dear friend from the first months we were in DeKalb (1966-1995). She invited me to the AAUW Book Group, which was a joy to me all those years. She persuaded me to take the presidency, and she was ever so helpful throughout. I recall such special times when we held May breakfasts there on the farm. The group was never too big for Ruth and Elwood to host. I have missed her but know she rests in her maker's arms.

Dear Susan and Family, Your mother sounds like an exceptional woman who loved science and family and was accomplished at both. I know she will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with you at this sad time. Carole Fitzpatrick

Ruth was an exceptional lady, and served as an example for those of us who were wondering how to combine career and family, which she was able to do successfully. She and Ellwood obviously enjoyed and cared for each other. I loved visiting the wildlife refuge that they created out of Illinois corn fields; it is just one reflection of their many contributions to society. Ruth was an interesting - and interested - person who enjoyed life and people. My condolences to the entire family, and...

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the honor to work with Mrs. Briles for many years and we developed a wonderful friendship. I will cherish my memories with her and I am a better person for having known her. She will be greatly missed. Sincerely, Linda Yates (Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL)

She was a very good friend and such a special lady. She definitely made the world a better place and will be greatly missed.
