In the early 1980's I personally encountered Dr. Winters just once -- during the renovation of the ground floor of Steele Hall while the Registration Center and Word Processing & Bulk Distribution Center were being created. My role then as an entry level manager for the Word Processing & Bulk Distribution Center was helped after I met Dr. Winters. I enjoyed our semiannual skirmishes during budget review time. Cliff was tough, but he had a twinkle in his eye and we had many laughs. Once I asked him if he was worried about fluctuations in enrollments in the DIPA program, and he responded that he had a special shoe box with which to deal with any unforseen financial problems. I reported to Cliff Winters in the 1980s. He was an outstanding mentor and role model. My respect for Cliff has continued to grow over the years. He was one of the very best of human beings and administrators.

I knew Cliff from when he came to Syracuse University until his retirement as Vice Chancellor in 1986. For most of those years I was chairman of the television-radio department.
