Not sure what to say?

I entered the Architecture program in the fall of 1970 with all the obnoxious behavior that an 18 year old could bring with him. Murray was my initial design teacher and I had him for many classes through 3rd year. I remember his ability to say insightful kind things about our work no matter how bad it really was. Others criticized but Murray encouraged. He was a good mentor for a young man entering a difficult profession. I owe much to Murray Smart. That is why I made the trip to...

Murray Smart was my 2nd Year Architectural Design Lab instructor whom I enjoyed very much. I remember his sense of humor and eastern Arkansas charm. When I first met him he surmised I must be from eastern Arkansas since my apparent accent gave me away. He was a delightful, intriguing man who had an ability to size a person up quickly. The one thing I remembered about Mr. Smart was that he would listen intently to whatever was on your mind and always offered encouragement. When I think back...

Dearest Family: please know I will keep you in my prayers. Murray was a good friend to Jerry Wall and me for many years. Although, Jerry has passed, I know he would be sadden by this loss. As the hours and days go by allow the loving memories of his time with you all. Laugh and know Jesus has healed him from the top of his head to bottoms of his feet. A friend in Christ Jesus, Suzanne E Wall

Sweet Carolyn - it is such a sadness that we feel knowing that Murray is no longer with us but we will await the day when we see him again in Glory! It was our absolute honor and privilege to know him and call him our friend. May God give you comfort as he wraps his arms around you and your family during this time.

Murray was a mentor to many of us about shared campus governance. His guidance, wit, and laugh reminded folks to treat important matters seriously but not to take ourselves too seriously. My recollection of him wearing a purple-ish jacket with a yellow shirt and a purple-yellow tie was that few folks could readily do that. It looked just right on him. His stylish flair could be striking.

Mrs. Smart, During my high school years, I was so happy to find that you had found someone to love. Murray's life was very full, and it's wonderful that you had so many years together. I pray for you and your family at this time.

Carolyn and family, we will miss all things Murray! What a delight it was knowing him for such a long time.
Thinking of you as you go forward now.

Smart family, with most sincere condolences. Murray was a true friend and colleague. All will miss his whit, charm and contributions to our life

Just learned of Professor Smart's passing...He certainly will be missed and was one of those "Gems" that a community and school always wishes for and certainly got within Murray! I will never forget Murray's zest for architecture..I always enjoyed his classes which were a cut above the rest. He was very generous with his time and talent and will be remembered fondly by many. Prayers go out to family and friends...God Bless.
