Clyde Woods Obituary

October 7, 1930 - February 21, 2019
Clyde Thomas "Tom" Woods left this earth on February 21, 2019 to be with God in Heaven. Tom was born on October 7, 1930 in Youngstown, Ohio. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Alma Morrall, who died when Tom was 9 years old, his father Emil Clyde Woods, and Sister Janet. Tom graduated from Kent State in 1954, and then entered the U.S. Army as an Infantry Officer.
Tom spent two years in the Berlin Brigade in Berlin, Germany where he met his soon to be wife, Evelyn, an Army Nurse serving in Berlin at the time. In early 1956, Tom left the Army and returned to Ohio to work with his father. Tom soon returned to the Army at the end of 1956 as an officer in the Medical Service Corps. Tom retired in 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel after spending over 24 years in the Army which included two tours in the Republic of Korea and one tour in Turkey.

After retiring from the Army, Tom was the Business Manager of the Tackle Box store for 15 years. He helped grow the store from a small fishing tackle only store in downtown San Antonio to a multifaceted outfitters store in Alamo Heights.

Tom married his wonderful wife, Evelyn, in 1957. They moved with the Army through many assignments ultimately ending up in San Antonio in 1972. After retiring, Tom and Evelyn travelled to many places in the United States and throughout the world. Tom and Evelyn loved to dance and as recently as a few days before his death, Tom was still dancing to the best of his ability at the Forum Happy Hour.

Tom was always generous with his time and always willing to help a friend in need. He was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church where he was an Assistant Treasurer and a devoted member of the "Lunch Bunch". Tom also served at St. Pius X Catholic Church, where Evelyn is a member, as the leader of the Silver Streaks Seniors for 10 years and the Arboreans for 20 years. Tom was a member of the St. Anthony's Seniors and the Golden Travelers. Tom was also a member of the Berlin Veterans Association and VFW Post 8541.

Tom enjoyed spending time boating and water skiing at Canyon Lake for many years. He was a devoted Cleveland Browns fan through the long-ago good times and the numerous years of bad times.

Thanks to the wonderful staff at B.A.M.C., especially Doctors Stotts and Burkhardt. Thanks also to the staff and the wonderful residents at the Forum, Kindred Hospice, his nurse, Candie, and home health aide, Jodi, who made him laugh.

Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn (Jones), two sons, Kent (Mary), and Stuart Woods, niece, Linda (Alex) Johnson, and nephews, Tom and Jon Port as well as many, many friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, St. Pius X Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 pm on Monday, March 4th at Sunset Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 5th at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
