Rigby Harting and Hagan Funeral Home - Media Obituary

Colin Wordley returned to The Force on Memorial Day of 2018. Colin is survived by his loving wife Susan Duncan of Media, PA, his son Morgan Wordley of Morton, PA , his stepson Sean Damon of Philadelphia, PA, his sister Rita Wilson of Newmarket, England and his brother Richard Wordley of Burry Port, Wales.

A well known Jedi warrior Colin was born in Haverhill England in the country of Suffolk in 1939 during the Second World War. He skillfully evaded attempts by the Dark Side to take him out early on and gained a lifelong animosity toward Nazis. He had to contend with the Dark Side in a number of forms in his early years, namely the English system of public education and Sudbury Grammar school. There he would have to rebuff efforts to make him ‘just another brick in the wall’ until he finally was expelled on his last day of school for successfully resisting said efforts. He went through a number of jobs until he ended up landing a job in 1958 at the Cambridge Language Research Unit helping out some early computer programers by fetching them tea and running errands. In a scene reminiscent of the movie Good Will Hunting Mr. Wordley ended up helping them solve an algorithmic equation they were hung up on and subsequently his employers helped him get into college at Swarthmore. He emigrated to the US in 1960 on the S.S Helga Oldendorf.

Mr. Wordley graduated from Swarthmore in 1964 with a BA in Mathematics. He went on to work as lead programer at the Institute for Environmental Studies at University of Pennsylvania and director of Computing Services at Wharton Econometrics. He eventually avoided success in business, a well known path to the Dark SIde, by starting his own business Software Innovators where he worked from 1984 through 2009. Shortly after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease he retired to enjoy the rest of his life.

He was stereotypically English and was a soccer coach and an avid gardener. He gave up his first love of alcohol to become a ‘teetotaler’ and was sober for 39 years. He was part of the fellowship of Alcoholic Anonymous in Delco where he refined his Force powers. He was often known to wear his Yoda shirt at local AA meetings and say ‘Do or do not there is no try”. While this may sound pretty silly there was something simultaneously adorable and profound about it.

As one of his loved ones remarked ‘He was a bit of a rogue, but he was lovable’ Indeed he stole a number of our hearts before he suddenly absconded after spending his final hours sitting by his garden in the backyard. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 2nd at 1 PM at Providence Friends Meetinghouse located at 105 North Providence Road in Media, PA.

Donations may be made in his memory to The Parkinson Council (http://theparkinsoncouncil.org) at 111 Presidential Blvd. Suite 141 Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004-1023 or The Parkinsons Foundation (http://parkinson.org) at 200 SE 1st Street Suite 800 Miami, FL 33131.

Not sure what to say?

Colin was my mentor during our employment as consultants for Philadelphia Electric Co and the PJM Interconnection office and was later my manager while we were with Wharton Econometrics. I am forever grateful for all I learned from him and for the friendship we shared.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Wordly. He was my soccer coach back in the late 1980s. We played on Sundays and always had a great time. Mr. Wordley was a funny guy and a supportive coach. We always knew we had an advantage with a coach from the UK! I haven't seen him in decades but heard of his passing and want to extend my condolences to the family and let you know that he made it possible for a lot of fun times. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

I will always remember Colin's wisdom that he so freely shared among his peers in Media. He was a loving, caring soul who fought hard against Parkinson's and always had a kind word for those who were struggling. I know he lives on within the Force and I'm sure he is enjoying the next phase of his spiritual existence! Love and prayers to Susan and his family.

DEAR SUSAN AND FAMILY:OUR DEEPEST SORROW FOR YOUR LOSS. COLIN'S UNIQUE QUALITIES WILL REMAIN IN OUR HEARTS. HE WAS A "SPECIAL" FORCE. LOVE BILL AND SUE

Colin..knew you were a roundball hooligan for Man U.
Ironic I read the news of your passing while at the soccer stadium in Chester..
I will miss you and see you on the other side.

Thank you, Colin. You have a real legacy and have left an enduring imprint on our world! Peace to Susan and the family.

Oh the stories he shared. It was an honor to sit for hours and hear the stories of his colorful life. I am honored to be a part of that story as he was a big part of mine. My deepest condolences to Susan, Morgan and Sean. His force is with me. Earth is a little dull now that he was needed elsewhere. Until we meet again

You just had to meet and talk to this fellow. He could take you on a journey, a wonderful one at that.
Glad I knew Colin, my regards to Susan and Morgan who were faithful always.

I'll see you Saturday
