REED & BENOIT FUNERAL HOME INC Obituary

Conrad “Skipper” Smith, 61, of Birmingham, AL, formerly of Watertown, was called home January 14th, 2017 after a brief illness.

The funeral will be 3 pm Saturday, January 28th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with his brother, Rev. Jeffrey Smith officiating. Spring burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours are Saturday from 1 pm – 3 pm at the funeral home.

He is survived by his parents, Andrew and Henrietta Thomas Smith, Watertown; brothers Rev. Jeffrey Smith, Watertown, Preston (Sue) Chapman, Fulton, Phillip (Deborah) Smith, Watertown; his sisters Venita Martindale, Albany; Kathryn Smith and Elizabeth Faulk, both of Watertown; several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a younger brother David Smith.

Conrad grew up in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in 1973. He was active in sports. He loved to attend dances and hang out with friends and family. After graduation, he served in the military from 1974-1977, then began a life with his wife Rosalind, who predeceased him.

Conrad worked as a landscaper, a job he loved. He was an avid animal lover, traveler, and taking care of those in need. He could fix anything and was always willing to learn.

He was affectionally known as “Skipper” by his family and friends. He embraced all who came in contact with him and had a great sense of humor.

The family wishes to express their gratitude by asking that donations be made to The Youth Advocate Program, 516 Bradley St., Watertown, NY 13601 in memory of Conrad Smith.

Online condolences can be made at www.reedbenoit.com.

Not sure what to say?

Memories of Skipper include his singing a cool duet with my brother Geo, an incredible Pop Warner football play he made, and the funny story he shared as he and his family made my mother's 80th birthday party so wonderful. A good person, from a warm family.

Skipper was best friends with my brother George. He loaned me his shoulder pads for a Red & Black scrimmage. He was athletic, a good singer. His family has many very loveable members.

David, Skipper, Venita and Philip's grandson are in heaven. May God comfort the Smith family.

Condolences to the Smith family. I played Pop Warner football with Skipper, he was on the Colts I believe, I the Black Clawson Giants. Also many fond memories of days at the YMCA as kids in the late 60's. Skipper was one of the fastest, I can see him now whizzing around that little oval track. RIP Skipper!

Rest in Peace Conrad; I was a classmate of yours at WHS. Joe Simmons

worked with skipper at air brake.what a fun guy.

So sorry to hear of Skippers passing, growing up next to the Smith family on East Main st. I have many great memories of Skipper and the family.
You all are in my thoughts

Andy, Jim and I won't be back from Florida until sometime in March so we are unable to share our condolences in person.
