Consuelo C. Herrera

Consuelo C. Herrera, our beloved mother, a long time resident of El Paso, Texas was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Monday the 9th of July at the age of 103. Born in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico in 1914 - the daughter of Pedro and Evarista Castanon - she was the eldest of four children (Beatrice Bustillos +, Maria Gonzalez + and Pedro Castanon, Jr.). The Castanon family immigrated to the United States in 1924. They eventually settled in Smeltertown, TX were she met and married Marcelo Herrera, Sr. who proceeded her in death after 64 years of marriage. They had ten children: Beatrice H. Limon + (Jose), Marcelo Herrera, Jr. (Amelia), Consuelo H. Beard (Humberto +), Maria Louisa Valverde (Enrique), Reynaldo Herrera (Teresa), Dolores Herrera, Francisco Antonio Herrera (Rita), Rosario H. Ortega (Jorge), Carolina Herrera and Ignacio Ricardo Herrera. Consuelo was a very active and devout member of San Jose de Cristo Rey Catholic Church in Smeltertown. She was a member of the Guadalupanas Association, the Sacred Heart Association, the Altar Society and a member of the choir. Consuelo was involved in helping build the pilgrimage road leading to the Mt. Cristo Rey statue. She was also a PTA President at E.B. Jones Elementary School in Smeltertown. Later in life she became a member of St. Patrick Cathedral and served as a member of the Altar Society. She had 28 grandchildren (Daniel Herrera +), 25 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Consuelo had a deep love and affection for America and proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1957. She was all about family, food, love, generosity and faith. Now that her blessings are coming from heaven, we remain honored to have been in the presence of this beautiful soul. To her we say "Que Dios Te Bendiga Mamasita.". Visitation will be Friday, July 13, 2018 from 5-9pm at Martin Funeral Home Central with a 7pm vigil. Funeral Mass will be 9:00 am, Saturday, July 14, 2018 at St. Patrick Cathedral. Interment to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
