Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, Inc. Obituary

The Christian Benevolent Funeral Home., Announces with deepest sympathy the transition of Cora L. Powe Scott

Mrs. Cora Lee Powe Scott was born on July 11, 1937, in Mobile, AL, to Irene Powe and Hamp Banks, Sr.

Cora graduated from Central High School in 1956. After graduation, she married her long-time sweetheart, Edward Marion Scott, Sr., on September 28, 1956. From this union came four sons and one daughter.

Cora was a devoted and loving military housewife who enjoyed sewing and making clothes for her children, baking, cooking, hosting holiday and Sunday dinners, and traveling. Cora was very family oriented and also enjoyed get-togethers at her late sister Bessie’s house where they would have crawfish boils and lively card games. While she was a devoted mother, she was an even more devoted grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren doing things such as baking homemade cookies and poundcakes, putting together puzzles, playing hopscotch and baseball in her backyard, going to the movies, going fishing, and reading stories (Martha and George and Corduroy were her favorites). She also volunteered as a foster grandparent to the neighborhood youth at Rickarby Park for several years.

Cora was a long-time member of Bethel AME Church where she was a faithful member of the Steward Board.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents, Irene Powe and Hamp Banks, Sr.; her husband, Edward Marion Scott, Sr.; her mother-in-law, Julia E. Mitchell; her sisters, Betty Banks and Bessie Webb; her brother, Hamp Banks, Jr.; her brothers-in-law, Richmond Mitchell and Eddie L. Turner, Sr.; her sister-in-law, Josie Richardson; her aunt-in-law, Elouise Rosemond; her nephew, Eddie L. Turner, Jr.; and her cousins, Essie Powe and Daisy Lee McConnell.

On Wednesday, December 1, 2021, the LORD called for her to come to her heavenly home in eternity with Him. She leaves behind a loving family to cherish her memories: 1 sister; Paulette Williams; 1 sister-in-law; Mary M. Turner; 5 children; son, Russell (Mergy) Scott; son, Stanley Scott; daughter, Sheila (Joaquin) Pruitt; son, Edward M. (Jacqueline) Scott, Jr.; son, Victor (Llawana) Scott; 11 grandchildren; Deljuana, Carlos, Brandi, Dominic, Demetrius, Anjelica, Brooke, Gabby, Joshua, Keldrick, and Exzavier; 10 great-grandchildren; Jalen, McKenzie, Michaya, Amayah, Jayden, Jordan, DJ, Carson, Harper, and Grace; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family, including two devoted nieces, Cheryl Lang and Cynthia Coe.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Springhill Memorial Hospice, especially nurses Melissa, Sandra, Monica, and nurse aid, Ticko, for their services leading up to her final moments.
