Byles Memorial Home - New London Obituary

Craig R. Kirchhoff, Sr., 78, of Quaker Hill, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, just shy of his 79th birthday. Craig was born on November 12, 1946, he was the son of the late Richard F. and S. Elizabeth “Betty” Kirchhoff.

Craig met the love of his life, Gayle, when he was just 12 years old. They began dating when she was 16, and two years later, on Christmas Eve in 1965, he proposed. They married on June 25, 1966, and built a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, and adventure—nearing 60 years of marriage.

A talented and hardworking mechanic, Craig co-owned and operated Craig’s ARCO in Montville and Washington Park Service Center in Groton for over 30 years. After selling the business, he continued his career at MJ Sullivan in New London until his retirement.

He proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserves, receiving an honorable discharge.

Craig was as a life member of the Quaker Hill Fire Department. He was an avid sports fan with a special passion for NASCAR. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, he was a local modified racecar owner, well-known around the tracks. He also cherished RVing, boating, and fishing—hobbies he enjoyed most alongside Gayle during their many trips together. In retirement, they loved spending winters in Florida as snowbirds, making new memories and friendships along the way.

Craig leaves behind his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, Gayle; his children Craig and Angela, Kathie and Leonard Rochester, and Christine and James Cleary; his grandchildren Samantha, Felicia, Alyssa, Heather, Jaime, Cody, Jessica, and their spouses; and his great-grandchildren Harvey, Lucian, Ayden, and Greyson. He is also survived by his brother and former business partner, Richard T. Kirchhoff, and his sister, Barbara Michonski. Craig will be dearly missed by his many nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were blessed to know him and whom he loved dearly.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Sunday, November 23, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Quaker Hill Fire Department, 17 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill CT 06375.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Craig’s memory to the Quaker Hill Fire Department or Connecticut Humane Society, 169 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill, CT 06375.

Craig will be remembered always for his warm heart, dedicated service, and the deep love he shared with his family, friends, and community.

Happy Birthday Dad❤
We miss you and love you dearly!

Some of us never thought we’d make it this far, Buddy. I hope you looked back at many of our good times and mutual friends. You were a friend to customers in need and gave them a fair shake. May you be getting a fair shake now. And to Gayle too. God bless you both. -winnie
