Cruz Reyes Hinojosa Sr., age 89, of Houston, Texas passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023.

Cruz was born May 3, 1933, in Lawton, Oklahoma, but grew up in Houston's inner-city Second Ward at an early age, long before there was an EADO. He attended Sam Houston High School in Downtown Houston, and with his love for sports, played quarterback for the Tiger football team. He married the love of his life, Susie, on March 2, 1952, and together they raised nine children. With his family he lived in many places while in the military, including Germany. He also lived throughout the world, serving in Alaska before it became a state, and Thailand during the Vietnam War. After serving his country for 21 years, he returned to Houston with his wife and children.

After retirement from the United States Air Force, Cruz worked as a purchasing agent for Texas Southern University and retired with the State of Texas in 1996. He was an avid sports enthusiast and he actively played throughout his years, golf, football, basketball, baseball, softball, racquetball, volleyball, handball, bowling, squash and spent many years umpiring and refereeing as well. He dedicated his life to serving church and community causes and initiatives, such as St. Vincent de Paul Society, Founder and Charter Member of Knights of Columbus Council #7230, Faithful Navigator and member of KC 4th Degree Assembly #1141, KC District Deputy, Church Bazaar chairman, Parish Credit Union President, Order of Alhambra, Harris County Grand Jury, Community Development Commissioner, Precinct Judge, Life-long Coach of youth baseball, softball (men & women teams), basketball and many other sports programs. He was instrumental in the 1st phase renovation of Houston-East End's Eastwood Park and the placement of Bishop Patrick Flores Community library. In other times of enjoyment, he loved music, singing from many genre's including eras of the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, ranging from German & Mexican/Tejano polkas, country & western, doo-wap, and more. Dancing was second nature to him, and he could dance any number with the right partner.

Fluent in German, Spanish and English languages, he sought to immerse himself in cultures other than his was part of who he was. He will always be known as someone who was frank and direct, offering no-nonsense counsel to others when asked. Politically active for over 50 years in Houston, Congress members, State legislators, City of Houston Mayors & City Council members can attest to this fact. A loyal friend to those he admired, Brother Cruz was one of the last of a generation of the old inner-city Houston leaders.

Cruz is survived by his children, Cruz Jr., Joe, Sylvia, Rev. Damian, Susie Lara (Robert), Thomas (Lizette), John (Martha), Sarah Romero (Steven), and Michael, 16 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish his memory Brothers Jim Hinojosa, Louis Hinojosa, Jr., Ray Hinojosa, and Minnie Vega (Arnold), and many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents Luis & Cipriana Hinojosa, Sister Viola Medina and wife, Susie Hinojosa.

A Vigil Service & Rosary will be held on Monday, February 13, 2023, at 7pm at Blessed Sacrament Church, Houston.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 1pm, Rev. Damian Hinojosa, Celebrant.
A reception will follow at Blessed Sacrament Church parish hall.
