Not sure what to say?

I had the privilege of learning from and being inspired by Dr. Compton while I was a student at Purdue. I must admit, I had no idea of the extent of his intellectual, professional & personal accomplishments until I read his obituary, but I benefited greatly from his superb teaching skills and genuine interest in my growth and development. Ten years after I had graduated, I received a call from him about a potential job at the Regenstrief Center. He asked if I remembered him, and I remember...

For several years Dale was my tax client when he was with Ford Motor Company and I was a tax partner at Arthur Andersen & Co. It was more than a client relationship, however; I considered Dale my friend and we had several enjoyable conversations together over the years. He and Jeanne were gracious hosts to my wife and me at their vacation place in northern Michigan. A kind and gentle man, and obviously a brilliant scientist, it was my good fortune to know him.

I had the pleasure of having Dale as a member of my Board of Directors and Technical Advisory Board from 1986 until 2001. We became good friends during that time and I always viewed Dale as one of the great "gentlemen" of our time - with his combination if intelligence, professionalism, integrity, and grace. Our interactions continued long after our business association ended. I will miss him dearly.

Sending love and condolences to Gayle, Don and Duane and their families. I grew up next door to the Compton's and have fond memories of Jeanne and Dale and their children. We had a great neighborhood on Forman Drive in MI, and a wonderful community to grow up in. Best wishes to your family, I know my parents really loved Dale and Jeanne and miss them. Sincerely, Andrea (Holden) Haigh.

Dale Compton was a scholar, a gentleman, and a leader. Purdue and the community will miss him.

I knew Dr. Compton not as a distinguished professional but as a husband and father. Many accomplished people do so at the expense of family. Not so, with Dr.Compton. I had the privilege of knowing him a short time while in college. And he was always kind and attentive. I witnessed firsthand his devotion to his marriage and his family. His legacy will live on through his most cherished success, his children. My condolences.

My wife Beth and I had known Dale and Jeanne for the last 50 yrs from student days in Urbana, Il, to their "getaway" chalet in northern MI. We have benefitted greatly from knowing them. We extend our sincere sympathy to their children and grandchildren.

My late father Fred Secrest worked with Dr. Compton at Ford. Although I did not know Dr. Compton, I know Dad, who was more of a finance type than a scientific type, respected him. Reading the obituary, I can see why and express my sincere sympathy to the family.
