Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Dan Klenke was a man who experienced life to the fullest, always seeking out new adventures, projects, and opportunities for fun. He excelled in every role he took on, from engineer to cowboy to devoted husband, brother, father, and friend. His earthly chapter was cut short on February 16th, 2024, leaving a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A native of Edwardsville, Illinois, Dan was born on July 24, 1951 to Reba (Rowlands) and the late Murrell Klenke. He was soon joined by middle sister Diana (Pate) and later surprised by the addition of little sister Cheryl (Veague). In 1973, Dan graduated from the University of Missouri - Rolla where he majored in Mechanical Engineering.

Dan went on to a successful 37-year career at General Electric. But this was far from his only profession. Throughout his life, he was also a trail boss, a pirate, a brewer, an Eagle Scout, a Jack-of-All-Trades and a Master-of-Many. Notorious for his highlighted and tabbed binders, Dan was always planning a trip or seven, often a year in advance. He woke every day with a to-do list ensuring that all tasks were completed in time to savor the beauty of a sunset at happy hour. Dan insisted that each sunset was different so he needed to enjoy them all from his hot tub.

Beyond his résumé and list of honors, his finest role was as leading man in a romance for the ages. If you spent any time with Dan, you knew he “married a cheerleader.” Dan met Connie Gayle Clark in 1977 in a bar. Love for his “Wonder Woman” knew no bounds. Together, they traveled the world and found a live band to play “Mustang Sally” in every town. Each day was filled with love, laughter, and an endless supply of conversation. They raised over a dozen horses, a mule, a liquor cabinet full of dogs, countless pairs of barn kitties, a rotating cast of chickens, one calf purchased at an auction who promptly jumped the fence, and two children - Marlana Hope (Joe Smith) of Pasadena, CA and Dustin Klenke of Washington, MO. Dan was a devoted father who loved his children fiercely.

A beloved uncle of Derek (Anne), Amanda, Sarah (Glen), Amanda (Josh), Danette (George), and Jake, Dan was promoted to the title of “Funcle Dan” through his playful and occasionally daring interactions with his 8 great-nieces and nephews. He cherished these relationships, along with those of his sister-in-law Susan Helm, brothers-in-law Steve Pate, John Veague, and countless friends he considered family. He is preceded in death by his father Murrell, his sister Cheryl, mother and father-in-law Marge and Ira Clark, brother-in-law Walter, and many beloved pets.

Not sure what to say?

Always operating at full speed with a plan, every outing with Dan turned into an adventure from the first time we met in the spring of1972 in Rolla, Missouri. I have always been envious of your ability to lead others and organize detailed plans for the group. The closeness we shared was mutual as was our background and love for the outdoors. The good times have been great times and all the memories lasting never to be forgotten! One Life One Time- Godspeed Dan

Grew up out in the country not far from the Klenke family. To all, my deepest sympathy.... Rest in peace Dan. ...Nancy Utechtt

First of all Connie, my deepest sympathy. Dan and I were good friends and we grew up together in the Quercus Grove community and graduated high school the same year. Even though we kind of lost touch with each other, I am sure he and I remember all the same great times we had together as kids. If I ever get a chance to meet you Connie, I will tell you some funny stories about how Danny taught me how to ride (sorta) horses! I still romp around the same woods we did near his homestead and the...

He truly lived life to the FULLEST! Every person should learn from his examples! Connie, you where so fortunate to have had such a wonderful person in your life, as you, one day, will be together AGAIN❣

Dan was the rock of the Timber Ridge community. He was always striving to better things for all of us. I enjoyed our talks about fishing at the lake.

Connie, my heart breaks for your loss but I know your life and love with Dan are gifts beyond loss. How fortunate you are to have had such adventures...so many will mourn his absence but celebrate his presence that somehow touched them; through you, the kids, his work, his passions... hugs and love.
With sincere sympathies, Nancy Bork

Connie, my deepest and sincere sympathy for you. What a beautiful and telling obituary! What an incredible loss for your family. Prayers for all of you during these difficult days. I will always have the fondest of memories of Dan from our barn parties and common ground bonfires!

Dan always made me feel like Family, starting from the first time I met him. I’ll Never forget Christmas 2010 in TXI grabbed a cup of coffee and saw Cheryl- “Where’s my Nephew Jake?” She started smiling, “Uncle Dan Camp.” Wasn’t too long after that I saw the 2 of them out in the backyard adding decorations for the Festivities!!!

We will miss you Dan. Heather and I would enjoy sitting with you at the Brew meetings and hearing about your trips and adventures. YOU WILL BE MISSED
