Cmdr. Dan Shanower, 40, a U.S. Navy intelligence officer who grew up in Naperville, was believed to be among those working at the Pentagon when a plane struck.

Shanower's family has lived in Naperville for years, and Dan Shanower's father, Don, is a former North Central College professor, family friend Dick Eastman said.

A Naperville Central High School graduate, Shanower served "all over the globe," said Eastman. He also wrote essays for the U.S. Naval Institute magazine Proceedings, including one in 1997, called "Freedom Isn't Free."

Not sure what to say?

I just wanted to check in as 9/11 is just about upon us once more. I think of you often Shipmate and I was honored to serve with you in the Intelligence Center of the USS Midway (CV-41) for 2 years. You could always make me laugh ! Gone, but not forgotten my Brother. SEMPER FORTIS.

Cdr Dan Shanower, I never met you, but I knew your parents from when I played softball for North Central College on the Shanower Family Field. I will be running in your memory at tomorrow's 3rd Infantry Division 9/11 Memorial Run. Your sacrifice and legacy will always be remembered and will live on.
~ Captain Laura Whitfield, US Army, Intelligence

We remember you, Dan. Remembering all of the laughter at Carroll College and the parties at your folks house in Naperville when they were gone for the weekend (Sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Shanower). Remembering your goofy sense of humor. I'm grateful to have known you, still heartbroken for your family, and thankful for your service to our country. Hugs to the entire Shanower family.

I knew Dan when we both served in Japan while in the Navy in 1986. He was roomates on board MIDWAY with my best friend, Doug Hora, who was lost at sea during an aviation incident in the Indian Ocean. I remember and honor Dan's memory today and thank him for his service.

Praying for Dan's friends and family today. We will always thank him for his service to this country. With love from Texas,
