I am so very sorry to hear of your family's loss. I too have seen the sad effects of ALS on a close friend, and my heart goes out to you all. I hope the loving memories that you shared together bring you some joy, as well as reflecting on the future promise of Isa 33:24 - the time when no one will say they are sick.
