Danny and I, both Richmond, CA natives, met at El Cerrito HS, where we were both student leaders and athletes. I was a member of a YMCA club, the 49ers, exclusively white males. I encouraged Danny to apply for membership (1962) as he was a special person, upbeat with a nonstop smile, one of those people who had it'.
