Daniel Cahill Obituary

Dr. Daniel Francis Cahill

January 26, 1936 - December 5, 2016

Raleigh

Dr. Daniel Francis Cahill, 80, of Raleigh, passed away Monday, December 5, 2016. He was born January 26, 1936 in Fall River, Massachusetts, son of the late Daniel Cahill and Margaret (Sullivan) Cahill.

Dan was a faithful member of St. Peter and Paul Parish where he attended elementary school. He attended Durfee High School in Fall River. He obtained an undergraduate degree at Stonehill College. He continued his education with a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master's and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He started his career as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service, retiring with the rank of Naval Captain and receiving the Service's Commendation Medal after 20 years of service.

Dan worked for the United States Environmental Protection Agency in the RTP from 1972 until 1982 when he left as a Division Director. His career next took him to Carolina Power & Light Company where he directed the laboratory for environmental monitoring of the company's nuclear power plants. Throughout his career he authored numerous well-regarded scientific articles. He had the privilege of testifying before a Congressional subcommittee about his work. His career path took him to positions in Las Vegas, Honolulu and Montgomery. He retired from CP&L in 1996 and then began an even more active retirement.

In his retirement, he gave back to the community in numerous capacities. He helped young children read through the Communities in Schools Program; spent countless hours volunteering at Catholic Parish Outreach, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, The Healing Place, and as a Rex Hospital Minister. He and Barbara have been faithful member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish since 1972 where they have developed deep friendships. He loved reading and learning throughout his life. He took up golf late in life and treasured his regular Thursday tee times with the Holy Hackers. He was fortunate enough to play with his grandsons Reed and George. Dan spent many, many days over the past 44 years at the Alexander Family YMCA.

Dan is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Becker) Cahill of Raleigh, his son Dan Cahill and wife Sallie of Raleigh; daughter Cristin Buckley and husband Mike of Raleigh; grandchildren Kathryn, Reed and George Cahill; Graham and Julia Harrell; and Tyler and Evan Buckley.

A time of visitation will be held at the son's home from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday December 8, 2016.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, December 9, at Our Lady of Lourdes 2718 Overbrook Dr, Raleigh, NC 27608.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dan's honor be made to Catholic Parish Outreach (2013 N. Raleigh Boulevard, Raleigh, NC 27604) or the Alexander Family YMCA We Build People Campaign (1603 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27605).

May 27, 2017 - I have just learned of the death of Dan and belatedly send my condolences to Barbara and the family. He had been a dear friend and colleague of my late husband Ezra Berman and used to send me a Christmas card every year remembering the Wargames they would play at Christmas. This past year I did not get a card. Deeply sorry I did not follow up with a phone call. Rita Berman, Mebane, NC.

Dear Cahill Family, I could not have met a kinder, more understanding and gifted man than Dr. Dan. I began my career at the Shearon Harris Energy and Environmental Center in 1974 after, graduating from Meredith College. Chemistry was my passion then that has continued through my 40-year career and I have to credit his encouragement during my formative years. Your jewel is in heaven! I was so very sorry to learn that Dan passed away this week. As a co-worker at EPA, I first met him in the 70's (before he retired the first time, as I liked to tease). He was such a gentleman and a truly fine person. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

To Dr. Dan Cahill's entire family....

It was rather shocking to hear the news about Dr. Cahill this past week. Our old CP&L Radiochemistry group gathers every year around this time and this year's event was in the planning when we heard the news. The world has become a lesser place with his passing. I personally owe Dan a great deal in my personal career path in Environmental Radiation Monitoring; ..my six years at the Harris E&E Center will forever represent a major high point in my life personally, and as a professional. My deepest regards and condolences to the family. -- Roger P. Brown, Radiochemistry Supervisor, NCDHHS/State Lab of Public Health.

Dear Cahill Family, I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dan. He was a kind, gentle and compassionate man. He was very kind to me following my transfer to EPA-RTP and continued to come to my office to chat when visiting after his retirement. His cheerful manner and sage advice helped me through some difficult times. I shall forever cherish these memories of Dan.

I was deeply sadden to hear of Mr. Dan's passing. I helped pack bags every first Saturday of each month with Mr. Dan at the Interfaith Food Shuttle to be distributed at Glenwood Towers. Mr. Dan was a wonderful man whom I got to know and love being around for approximately fifteen years. His presence will be greatly missed at Interfaith Food Shuttle. I will be praying for the family. Rest In Peace my friend. Mrs. Margaret Miller

Dear Cahill family,
I am so sorry to learn of Dan' death. Dan was largely responsible for my career at EPA where I joined ORD IN 1973 and retired in 2011,. He not only hired me but served as a mentor and a friend. He had a passion for both his work and his colleagues. He will be sorely missed.
Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the services since my wife and I are currently traveling in California.. My thoughts will be with Dan and all the family.

I knew Dan for many years when I was volunteering at CPO on certain Wednesdays. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and "coffee making ability".
I moved away from Raleigh 4 years ago and lost touch with him but he will always be part of the fond memories I have of our days volunteering together.
May God bless his soul and give strength to his family during this difficult time.

I was saddened to learn that Dr. Dan passed away on Monday. I had the privilege of meeting and working with Dan at CP&L and enjoyed talking sports with him. Over the past couple of years I had joined in on our "lunch dates" where he, Jim Johnson, and myself would meet in Chapel Hill and catch up. As a matter of fact, we had just gotten together a few weeks ago. I will always have fond memories of Dan and will miss getting together for lunch.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
