DANIEL SCOTT CHAPLIN, age 67, father of Naoibh Chaplin (Michael Stanard), Deirdre Chaplin (Karluis Ramos) and Michael Chaplin; grandfather of Áine Jane, Nora Rose and Briahna; former husband of Helen (nee Mulcahy); son of the late Jean (nee Eaton) and Maynard Chaplin; brother of James (Jaqueline), Susan and Timothy (Gail); uncle, cousin and friend of many. Passed away June 6, 2021.
He loved his children deeply and taught them everything he knew about the world. He was happiest when playing with his grandchildren, erupting with laughter whenever he was with them.
Dan was a civil liberties advocate and respected criminal defense, civil attorney, and victims rights attorney for 38 years. He was a Graduate of Eastlake North High School Class of ‘71. He attended Hiram College where he found his love for history and the arts. He earned his Juris Doctorate at Cleveland State Marshall College of Law with a year of study at American in Washington D.C. He studied in and traveled to many countries, but especially loved Ireland where he fell in love with the culture and the mother of his children.
He served throughout Cuyahoga County and surrounding communities, helping those in need when they were at their most vulnerable. He was involved in the Cleveland community. He assisted in the early projects of revitalizing the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood in the 1980’s. He developed community gardens on both the West Side and East Side of Cleveland, creating beautiful places for neighbors to come together.
He loved baseball, and officially became an umpire for community little leagues, high school and college baseball. He looked forward to volunteering at the Cleveland International Film Festival every year. He relished everything the city had to offer: Indians games, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Cleveland Natural History Museum, the Cleveland Orchestra and Lake Erie.
Dan was a human encyclopedia who could tell you everything about anything. He was always reading something to strengthen his already remarkable brain. He was an avid bird watcher and knew birds by their calls. He could identify any bird whether you asked or not. Dan loved to bring wild flowers from his garden or anywhere he could find them to those he loved. He was a firm believer in doing small things with great love. He will be missed dearly by so many and leaves an incredible legacy of impact in the city he called home.
