Daniel Joel Derr
“Danny”
April 8th, 1952 – July 2nd, 2017
Daniel Joel Derr, 65, passed away at his NE Portland home. Danny leaves behind a brother, Phillip; his sister-in-law, Lynda; four nephews, Adam, Mark, Mathew and Michael. There are five grand-nephews and one grand-niece. There are many cousin’s and close friends.
Born in Portland, Danny moved with his parents and brother to San Mateo, CA when his father was transferred to San Francisco. There Danny attended school. While attending Aragon High School, Danny participated in football and track. He finished his education at the College of San Mateo.
Danny loved the outdoors. He was an avid skier, bicyclist, hiker, boater, and camper. In his twenties he and a friend rode their bikes in Europe, biking over the Alps of Switzerland and Italy. His classic Volkswagen Vanagon exemplified his life style.
Danny enjoyed his time with friends on the lakes and rivers of Oregon. Floating his raft down the John Day for days at a time and camping on her shores was humbling to him. The last week of his life was on Lost Lake.
His music prowess was legendary. Gifted with the knack of an excellent ear, he could play anything on his guitar and organ. Only his voice surpassed his musical instruments. Countless hours serenading friends with his guitar, Danny would sing songs from all genres. His voice matched that to Neil Young from whom he idolized.
Danny loved watching movies as well as listening to music. His personal collections of movies and vinyl records testify to this cherished soul of a man. Danny would share his passion with anyone who would stop by to visit.
Danny’s personality was magnetic. His kind heart and generosity bonded all.
Danny worked at Portland General Electric all his working life. He was a Meter Reader and a field collector. His PGE family was so meaningful to him. Very close and dearing friends from PGE were his reward for 30+ years of service.
Living in the family home after his parents passing, Danny, with generous help of a dear and close friend, resurrected his back and front yard into a tropical paradise. Few can claim seeing palm trees, ferns, and exotic plants thriving in Portland’s four seasons. His eyes gleamed when a person for the first time saw bananas growing in the August, Portland sun.
Danny grew up as a boy and young man in the church. The old Trinity Baptist Church of Russian/German heritage was his Christian cornerstone. His adult life was directed as to what he was taught at a young age.
He is now safe in the hands of our Lord. Danny you will be surely missed.

I had so many wonderful times with Danny. We shared some great rafting trips; excursion to Orcas Island; climbing Mt. St. Helens; drinking at Produce Row; and yes, working with him for 30+ years. Dan was such a generous, kind man. He gave us the joy of hearing him play and sing his Neil Young songs. You will be missed, Mr. Derr. Love ya.

I read meters with Dan as well and remember he could always make me laugh with route stories and tales of reading celebrity's meters (Neil Young).
I remember running into him on multiple occasions back in the day at Tower Records and we'd chat music. His music knowledge was impressive to say the least and he always had a good recommendation for me. Dan was good dude and He'll be missed

My condolences to his family. While I was a new Meter Reader at PGE Dan helped me keep Calm. His presence let me know everything on my job, in my life and whatever I do will all be alright. Dan was a beacon of light throughout our world. He will always shine bright in my heart.
