I was a student of Physics at UMD in 1986 when I took Dr. Fivel's class. I tell people about him to this day and how he walked up and down the lecture hall steps with his arms moving in two different directions to demonstrate electromagnetism. He was a powerful man in a small stature, and I will never forget him.

I met Dr. Fivel in Oct., 1981. He owned several properties near the Howard Univ. area and needed someone to act as a manager for them. I collected rents and made him aware of any maintenence concerns. For the ten years that I lived in his property, I came to know Dr. Fivel as a fair and compassionate man who cared about his tennets and took good care of his properties. I drove near the house that I once lived in and thought about him. I decided to Google his name and it is with a heavy heart...

For many years I worked in the U of MD Lecture Demonstration Facility, and, backstage, just before his lectures, which he had memorized, or otherwise had "brain-accessible,” he would often tell jokes about persons of various religious faiths, highlighting their inconsistencies or consistencies. And there was the general addressing of other quirks in human nature. His humor did a lot to dissipate local stresses. And once there was the compassion expressed about persons with ADHD.
