Daniel Gottfried Obituary

Daniel J. Gottfried Daniel J. Gottfried, age 86, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Born January 6, 1928, in Menasha, WI, he was one of four children of the late Elmer and Adelaide Gottfried After graduating from Saint Mary's High School in Menasha, WI, he entered the U.S Navy and was stationed in Guam with the 103rd Seabees unit. He was awarded the Victory Medal. He began his career in 1948 as a printing pressman at Marathon/American Can in Neenah-Menasha, WI. He followed in his Dad's footsteps as he learned the cardboard packaging printing business. Over the years, he gained a keen eye in being able to assess the quality of the printing processes. He was transferred to the new Chambersburg packaging plant in 1965. He held various positions until he retired as the Plant Production Manager of the James River Corporation plant in 1986 after 38 years of service. Dan enjoyed gardening, camping and fishing with family and was responsible for a large Green Bay Packer contingent he brought to South Central Pennsylvania. Many trips to Lake Marburg at Codorus State Park helped occupy his retirement years. He won the Pennsylvania Big Fish trophy in 1994 for the largest perch (2 lbs; 14 7/8 in.) caught in the state that year. He also was a founding member of the Guilford Hills Swim Club, which brought enjoyment to the entire neighborhood. He was very involved with the community where he spent many years with the Knights of Columbus. He served as a member of the Home Association for many years and also was Grand Knight from 1988-1990. During that time, with the support of many fellow Knights, the council received numerous community, church and youth service awards for projects done in the area. This work allowed Council #1426 to be awarded Star Council in 1988-89 and 1989-90. Dan also spent decades in support of the "Chicken and Stuff" fundraiser for the Easter Seals Society of Chambersburg. He is survived by his wife Mildred of Shippensburg, PA, whom he married September 2, 1950; and six children: Michael D (Candace) of Chambersburg, PA, Victoria A. Reeve (Rowland) of Avalon, NJ, William D. of Canton, GA, Crystal (wife of David) of Edenville, PA, John R. (Stephanie) and Paul R. of Chambersburg, PA and Daniel D. (Elsa) of Cortland, OH; eight grandchildren: Stephanie, Travis, Jessica, Lauren, Corey, Kyle, Natalie and Brett; and four step-grandchildren, Jason, Mallory, Megan and Macie. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Chris A. Oyler; his son, David A.; and grandson, Devon A. Gottfried. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, September 20 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA at 11 a.m., where the Rev. Fr. Paul Theisz will celebrate. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass at the church. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the church or the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave. , Chambersburg, PA 17201. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L.
