Daniel was born on January 1, 1948, the third child of seven to David and Aurora (Garcia) Gutierrez Sr. in San Antonio.  He was raised in a loving and disciplined environment.  Daniel was adored by his brothers and sisters, and was known as a champion of love and good deeds.  He and his older brother David were inseparable as adolescents, and they were never far from each other throughout life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jane Lira; and sister-in-law, Rachel Ybarra Gutierrez.
