Our beloved husband, father and papa, Danny Hasty, left us to join our Lord on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Danny was born on September 21, 1942, in Holmes County, but he was raised and spent much of his life in Washington County. After graduating from Chipley High School in 1960, he began his 49-year law enforcement career by joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, DC. In 1962, Danny returned to Florida, joining the Florida Sheriff's Bureau, which later became the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Danny spent his entire law enforcement career as a specialist in forensic sciences, and was one of the world's most respected latent fingerprint experts. He was a life member and past President and Chairman of the Board of the International Association for Identification. Shortly before his death he received the Sustained Achievement Award from the Florida Division of the International Association for Identification. He spent 30 years with the FDLE in Tallahassee, and during that time was instrumental in a number of well publicized criminal trials, including testifying personally in the trials of Theodore Robert Bundy for the Chi Omega murders and the Lake City, Florida murder of Kimberly Diane Leach. His FDLE career led him to testify in criminal trials in 66 of Florida's 67 counties and supervised all aspects of the state's criminal forensic laboratory system. Danny retired from FDLE after 30 years and returned from Tallahassee to Chipley to become Sheriff of Washington County from 1993 to 1997. After his term as Sheriff, he served as a special independent advisor to the FBI for forensic laboratory matters, and became a key member of the product development team for Printrak Corporation's laser-based automated fingerprint recording, database and review system. He taught courses across the United States and around the world on the deployment and use of this system, including in Sweden, Denmark, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Belgium, Cyprus, Greece, Panama, Venezuela, Argentina, and Brazil.

Danny was an active member of First Baptist Church of Chipley, and had been a deacon and Sunday school teacher throughout his adult adult life. He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Kathryn Burdeshaw Hasty, his son, Michael Hasty of Chipley, son-in-law Todd Villella and granddaughters Sarah Villella and Emily Villella, all of Tallahassee. He joins in heaven his beloved daughter, Melissa "Missey" Hasty Villella, his parents, Preston and Beatrice Hasty, his sister, Eleanor Hasty Wilson, and brother, Winford Hasty. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 5 at 11 a.m. at Frist Baptist Church in Chipley with the Rev. Mike Orr officiating. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends Monday, October 4 at Brown Funeral Home Brickyard Road Chapel from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. Friends and family may sign the online register at www.brownfh.net

We will miss him.

Not sure what to say?

Was thinking about Danny this weekend and then this came in my email today. Was wishing there had been more like him and wondering if there are any like him today. Really one of the good ones in my book.

Kathy,
Latielle Hobby sent me a e-mail about Danny. So sorry to hear this. Danny trained me in latent prints in Tallahassee. He allways had such a warm welcome for everyone. Even last summer in light of the events you and he had experienced he took time to talk to Nancy and I. May the Lord support and sustain you and your family.

Kathy,
I just heard about Danny's passing. I know that you and your family are in the bittersweet phase of memories and trying to deal with the empty spots in your hearts. I remember Danny as a multi-talented friend who could help you figure out a professional dilemma or a commonsense problem and he provided not only advice but actual help. Although our contact had diminished to once every couple year or less, I am saddened that I will not be running into his cheery greeting at any...

I lived in Chipley when I was young and met many wonderful people. My sixth grade teacher was Mrs. Beatrice Hasty. Danny was her son and four years older than me but I knew him as a very nice boy. I also knew his wife Kathryn "Kat" because I was friends with her sister Sue. I just read of your loss and it sounds like Danny was as wonderful a man as the young boy that I remember. My heart goes out to you Kathryn and your family for your loss.

I met Danny in 1971 while interning with FDLE. I later became an FDLE agent and worked with him on many cases. He was a good man and a fine latent examiner.
