KARPINSKY, DANIEL L. LTC (RET.) U.S. ARMY, 67, of Louisville, died Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Baptist Hospital East.

Dan was first and foremost a loving husband, father and grandfather, but in his heart he was a soldier and true patriot who loved and fought for his country and served three tours in Vietnam. He was a cadet at West Point Academy and graduated from The University of Louisville. He also coached football and baseball for Hikes Point Optimist for many years. He was loved and respected by all for his kind heart, his dry sense of humor and his no-nonsense way of looking at life.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Sarah (Drake) Karpinsky.

He is survived by his wife, Sandi (Darnell); his sons, Kipp (Jennifer), Derek; and his grandson, Mac Edmonds, whom he adored, brothers, Dennis (Anne), Mike (Connie), Ron (Marilu), nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and many life-long friends, in-laws and "out-laws." His Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, September 20, 2010 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Wm. Haney, Dr. Ken Kral, Dr. Ben Schoenbachler, Dr. Nisha Varghese and their staff for their tender loving care, to Hosparus nursing staff, Patty, Janice, and Joanie who gave us love and security for the past year, the staff at Baptist East Palliative Care Unit and Diane Sadle and Slava Nedelin at the Jewish Community Center.

"Strength- It is not in numbers. It's in singular determination." In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in Dan's memory to The Senior Adult Program, Jewish Community Center, 3600 Dutchmans Ln., Louisville, KY 40205.

Sandi, we all love "Dano." He was an all around gentlemen. Thank you both for all of the strength, comfort, and courage as family friends you have given me all the years of my life thus far:) He was and is an angel in heaven now. He is dancing around pain free, just adoring you as much as he always had. True love is a great feeling. You and those sweet boys hold on to the wonderful memories. My family and I are only a phone call away:) Much love,
