Daniel Porras

Daniel passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017 at his home. He was born in El Paso, Texas to Amy and Luchy Porras. He spent his early years in El Paso, moved with family to Santa Clara, NM where he became a star athlete in basketball and track at Cobre High School. In 1968 he was state champion in the High Jump. Many deep long lasting friendships were developed while in high school – his heroes. The most deep and long lasting was his relationship with Cristy, his wife.
Danny will be remembered for his service as a firefighter for El Paso, Marshall Islands, and Ft Bliss. He worked in oil fields in Farmington, dispatched for NM State Police, and was Owner Operator for Schneider National. He was grateful for the special friendships with coworkers and boss at Signature Offset.
Danny had a great appreciation for nature, going on many camping and fishing trips, golfing at Dos Lagos, picking winners at Sunland Park and bird watching from his back porch. He had a talent for drawing, enjoyed music and loved to dance. His imitations of Michael Jackson, James Brown and Mick Jagger were memorable.
Time spent with family was filled with love, laughter and lots of creative story telling. His grandchildren were the recipients of many tidbits of knowledge (some untrue). People who met and knew Danny were touched by his spiritual and humorous take on life. He approached all of God's creation with great respect. We were blessed to know Danny; he set the example for love and forgiveness.
Survived by his wife, Suzanne "Cristy" Porras, three daughters; Sonia Crose of Austin, TX, Tara Pacini and husband Rick of Las Cruces, Anthea Cotton and husband Brandon of Costa Mesa, CA; a brother, Robert Porras of Arenas Valley, NM, two sisters; Irene Carroll of Dallas, TX, and Norma Miller of Austin, TX. Other survivors include 9 grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Freddy and David, nephew, Fred Jr.

Thanks to Dr. Podila and wonderful staff, special thanks to Dr. Duran and staff, much appreciation to Maria, his home health nurse, hearts full of gratitude to the amazing people who cared for Daniel at Memorial Medical Center. The family is also grateful to Ambercare for their exceptional compassion and care of Daniel. "Blessed are the caregivers."
A Memorial Mass will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina Street. Inurnment of Cremains will take place at a later date in Fort Bayard National Cemetery, Bayard, NM.
