As the Marcy Library branch supervisorI knew Mrs. Berchtold,, as I called her, as a feisty, energetic, avid reader. She would come in to pick up a stack of books weekly, frequently after her gardening or whatever project she had going on. She would often tell us snippets about her grandchildren and trips to North Carolina to visit family (or maybe it was South Carolina, it´s been a few years). I remember Aunt Susie quite well. My dad, Bill Mansfield was Bob Berchtold´s lifelong best friend. So growing up I have many memories of camping trips, Mexico trips and Crescent Bay Beach hangouts with the Berchtold family. My grandparents were also close with Grandpa Ernie and Grandma Lena. The amount of fond memories that include Susie are too many to include here however I always remember her as a strong lady and leader of her family. Susie Bertchtold .. Not only was she a neighbor when I was a child growing up on Maplewood, she was like a grandma to me, and BFF with my mom and dad which I know she´s up there giving them a hard time! I will ALWAYS remember her as the neighbor I can walk over grab an egg or coke cola out of the fridge.
