A fiercely competitive drag racer, Darrell W. Shipp rarely lost _ except for one race with the police shortly before he deployed. He and his buddy, Jimmy Smith, were in their Ford Mustang when a Trans Am pulled up beside them, the driver wanting to run. They screamed to repeated starts and stops for about eight traffic lights. "The brakes were smoking, and the clutch was smoking, but we won," Smith said. Shipp also spent the night in jail. Shortly after, on his birthday, he was hugging his family goodbye as he left for Iraq. Shipp, 25, of San Antonio, was killed Jan. 25 in Baghdad when his vehicle struck an explosive. He was assigned to Fort Hood. "He was not the run-of-the-mill kind of kid," said Lisa Hall, his high school counselor. "He was caring, giving, had impeccable punctuality and attendance. He was a role model and a very considerate young man." Shipp became one of the first students at Harlingen High School to take dual enrollment classes at Texas State Technical College. He also was involved in organizations such as SkillsUSA and the technology club. He graduated in 2000. He is survived by his parents, Doyle and Regina.

It has truly been my honor to sign Darrell's guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that Darrell will always be remembered in my home.
