Daryl Childress Obituary

Daryl Claire Sins Childress passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on October 16, 2021. A native New Orleanian, Daryl was born on April 21, 1948 and attended Academy of the Sacred Heart, graduating in the class of 1966. From there, she earned her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1971 and started teaching at St. Dominic Catholic School. Soon after, she met Rocky on a blind date (ballet performance), and the two married in 1974. Daryl stepped away from teaching to be a devoted wife and mother. She then returned to education, in various roles assisting special needs students in Jefferson Parish until retiring in 2012. Daryl's true selflessness and love was best demonstrated in her unyielding devotion to her family, including her husband and 4 children. She took daily care of a son with downs syndrome and autism from the time of his birth until he was 40 years old. In addition, she cared full-time for her husband Rocky, who contracted cancer at the age of 50, eventually passing away at 51. Daryl committed herself to lifelong service in her community. She participated in the Civitan Civic Association for over 25 years, taking on different roles from Vice President to President of the New Orleans chapter. This volunteer service organization supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through local projects, charitable events and research funding. Daryl's commitment to those in need continued with her role on the Board of Directors for the Arc of Greater New Orleans, where she served for 20 years. ArcGNO is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the independence and well-being of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism. Daryl impressed everyone she met as a kind, gentle, friendly and thoughtful soul. This extended from family to friends to complete strangers. Her beautiful smile and warm personality touched us all. She saw the good in every person, never judging, always assuming their best. Naturally, she made friends with ease, everywhere she went. She will be deeply missed by all the people who were fortunate to be part of her long and fulfilling life, most of all her family. Daryl is predeceased by her loving husband, Alvin Roch "Rocky" Childress, III, her parents Alma Claire Ramel Sins and George Frederick Sins, and her younger sister Lisa Anne Sins. Survivors include her four children, Daphne Claire Childress, Alvin "Roch" Childress, IV, Paris George Childress, and Melanie Anne Childress Carucci (David) along with four grandchildren, Raya Paris Childress, Julian Roch Carucci, Eleanor Lisa Carucci, and Isabelle Edith Carucci. She is also survived by her brother Frederick George "Ricky" Sins (Janet) and Kurt Francis Sins (Linda) along with several nieces and nephews. The family wishes a heartfelt thank you to Notre Dame Hospice and the caregivers who have supported Daryl over the last year. Relatives and friends are invited to honor the life and memory of Daryl at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Friday, November 12, with a Visitation at 9:00 am followed by a Service at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Lakeview Shepherd Center or the Arc of Greater New Orleans.

I remember going over to Rocky & Daryl's house, and immediately upon entering, felt at home. Both of them were so kind, caring, and loving, and it was always so much fun to be around them. And with 4 little ones around, you never knew what was going to happen! Good times!

It was always so nice to be around Daryl - she always made me feel so welcome to the family, and was always so upbeat. One of the nicest people I've ever met. Am so sorry to hear of her passing - she will be greatly missed.
