Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Sioux Falls Obituary

Following a life of service to the Lord and everyone he met, Daryl John Meyer passed away on November 11, 2024, of a sudden health event.  He was born on June 23, 1960, in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Washington High School in 1978 and in his desire to see the world, joined the Air Force in August of 1982. In service of his country, he traveled to Turkey where he most enjoyed the historical and biblical significance of the area. While in the Air Force, Daryl was also able to serve in other worldly places like Guam and Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD.

Daryl was a graduate of the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. He spent over 25 years in the technology field and began his career at the SD Board of Regents as a database analyst. He worked briefly for Software AG in Colorado as a technical support analyst and returned to South Dakota in 1997, retiring from Citigroup after 17 years. Of no surprise, one of his most fulfilling jobs was being involved in the education of students as a substitute teacher for the Sioux Falls School District and Kids, Inc. after school program.

Daryl had the gift of giving and cared deeply for people.  The Banquet and people there held a special place in his heart where he shared his faith and served thousands of meals to those in need. Daryl was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, serving Him in youth ministry, on the tech team, and as a Lifegroup leader at Central Church.

Daryl devoted much of his life to children. His love for children galvanized him to action, taking a stand on the front lines to protect the unborn. Participating in organizations that serve others, like the Alpha Center and Special Olympics, was especially fulfilling for him.

For recreation, he loved riding his bike, hunting and target shooting, playing darts, and spending time with family. He was fascinated in historical and family genealogy research, especially if traveling was involved. If you had a spare minute, Daryl would give you twenty explaining our famous relatives Laura Ingalls Wilder and maybe a story or two about an egg, the Wizard of Oz, and great cousin Kayo.

Although Daryl never married or had children of his own, he embraced the role of mentor and friend to many. His presence will be missed by those who knew him as a kind, generous, and compassionate man who always lent a helping hand.

Daryl is survived by his many friends and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marian Meyer. He is survived by his father, Alvin Meyer and siblings: Doug Meyer and his wife Shelley; Daniel Meyer, Alan Meyer and his wife Julie; and Ann Mathison and her husband Brett. Daryl loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews: Ryan,  Matthew, Ashley, Nicholas, Katie, Allison, Sarah, and Zachary. He had six great nieces and nephews: Nitaleigha, Emmet, Julia, Ava, Clara, and Audrey.

Funeral services will take place at Central Church (3102 W. Ralph Rogers Rd) on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. with a luncheon to follow before burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Family will be present for visitation at Heritage Funeral Home from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. From 5:00-6:00 p.m. there will be a time of reflection to share memories with friends and family.

Memorials may be directed to Central Church, The Banquet, or Alpha Center.

Not sure what to say?

I worked with Daryl in the late 70's at the Airport Inn. We had a lot of fun. Got to see him again at the Lowell Elementary reunion. Great guy. Condolences to family and friends

I got the pleasure of working with Daryl at Kids Inc. many times. Daryl always came in as happy as he ever could be and it always made our afternoon start so much brighter. During my time with Kids Inc., I received a promotion that put me in charge of my school and when Daryl found out, he told me how proud of me he was and it meant the world. My son and I would frequently bump into him at Canaries games and he would take time from watching the game to check in with both of us and listen...

Daryl was an incredible human being. I worked with him at Kids Inc. several times and what a joyful and kind person he always was. This saddens my heart to hear this. His good heart and bright soul will forever be remembered. He was a blessing to many and what a beautiful story he had. To his family, be proud of what an amazing gift he was to so many and praise God for the life he lived loving Jesus and sharing His love with others! I pray for peace and comfort for you all during this...

Always loved seeing Daryl and chatting with him at The Banquet. A sweet soul who is now enjoying the presence of God. Our sympathy to the Meyer family. Peace to all of you.

I enjoyed many conversations with Daryl during my time at Kids Inc. in the office. He would call to see where he was needed or if I had to change his assignment he was always willing to go where needed. A few times I also got to meet him in person and he was so personable and friendly. I would hear from other staff how much they loved having Mr. Daryl at their site. He was great with the kids and such a great worker and always reliable. We could use so many more people like him in the world....

We enjoyed meeting and working with Daryl at the Banquet. He always had a kind word and smile to share. He will be greatly missed.

I’m deeply saddened to hear about Daryl’s passing. We shared such special memories during the 1970s, and I’ll always cherish those times. I’m so grateful we had the chance to reconnect in recent years. Daryl left a lasting impression on everyone he met. My heartfelt condolences to your family and all who loved him.

Dwight
