Engaged on a Ski Slope
He was a rising star in the Toronto financial world, but David Barkway, a managing director of BMO Nesbitt Burns, the Bank of Montreal's investment firm, was not all business. He was known on Bay Street in Toronto for his determination to improve his golf game, his cigars and his practical jokes. Colleagues would return from lunch to find a flashing message on their computer screen that was impossible to delete. He became engaged in 1996 on a ski slope, presenting a diamond ring to Cindy McLennan after they had both taken a spill in the snow.

Mrs. Barkway, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, accompanied her husband on his final business trip to New York and was on her way to SoHo when the World Trade Center was attacked. Mr. Barkway, 34, had an appointment at Cantor Fitzgerald.

If the baby is a girl, Mrs. Barkway said, she will have to name her Zoe. "That's the name my husband wanted," she said, "I wasn't that keen on it, but he's going to get his way."

In Greek, she recently learned, Zoe means "life."

Not sure what to say?

Never forgotten.

22 years and David´s boys are now 22 and 26. They never knew their dad but I´m sure Cindy told them just how terrific their father was. #wewillneverforget.

Twenty years on and it is as raw now as it was then. I will never forget my friend and colleague.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years. Dave was certainly a unique person. We took our lifeguarding courses together and worked together for a few years. He was great at making people laugh. My favourite memory of Dave is his participation in a synchronized swimming routine for a show with 3 other guys. I think of Dave often.

Remembering David on the 20th anniversary of 9/11....

Never forgotten

19 years has passed and it seems like yesterday. For Cindy and her boys, know that David will be forever in our hearts and minds.

Another year has come and gone and David is still in our thoughts. He will be forever remembered. Stay well. Best, Frank.

In honourable memory of David Barkway, a native of Toronto. And Happy Canada Day in heaven!
