Mr. David Harold Burnette, age 70, of David Burnette Dr., passed away November 20, 2020, in Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, GA. He was born September, 6, 1950 son of the late Edley and Alvia Mahaffey Burnette. David graduated from Union County High School class of 1968, Truett McConnell College and Brenau University. He served in the USMC in Vietman and received a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the National Defense Medal. After serving in the military he became a Law Enforcement Officer with the United States Forest Service. He also worked part time at Union County Fire Dept. Station 1, and a Volunteer at District 2 serving as the 1st Lieutenant until the time of his passing.


David was of the Baptist Faith and was an ordained Deacon at Philadelphia Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He loved spending time with his family, camping, hunting, fishing, gunsmithing, and watching Atlanta Braves Baseball. Other than his parents he is preceded in death by 3 brothers, Eugene, Tommy and Gerald Burnette; 4 sisters, Brenda Sosebee, Wanda Brophy, Alwayne Totherow and Norma George.


Survivors include his wife and best friend of 51 years, Mary Burnette of Blairsville, GA; 3 sons, Robert (Tina) Burnette, Marc (Misty) Burnette, Andrew (Cianna) Burnette all of Blairsville, GA; 1 daughter, Christal (Mark) Chastain of Cherry Log, GA; 15 grandchildren, Cheyenne, Ashlyn, Sierra, Coleman, Campbell, Cora, Cooper, Kolbey, Korbin, Callen, Carter and Knox Burnette, Colt, Case and Cody Chastain; great grandchild, Berkley Lance; sister, Bonnie (Wayne) Dills of Lawrenceville, GA; 3 brothers, Frank (Carneal) Burnette of Buford, GA, Junior (Brenda) Burnette of Blairsville, GA and Richard (Barbara) Burnette of Blairsville, GA; sisters-in-law, Peggy Burnette of Arizona and Wanda Burnette of Grayson, GA brothers-in-law, Edward George of Stone Mountain, GA and Randy Sosebee of Blairsville, GA; many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.


Private family services were held Monday, November 23, 2020, at Philadelphia Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Burnette and Rev. Mark Chastain officiating. Music was by Lee and Cathy Griggs. Pallbearers were Mark Chastain, Marc Burnette, Andrew Burnette, Robert Burnette, Coleman Burnette and Colt Chastain. All other grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers. Interment was in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Union County Fire Department Station #2 (P.O. Box 1488 Blairsville, GA 30514) in David’s memory.

Mary, children and grandchildren. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of David. Earths' loss is Heavens' gain. Mary and family, we were so saddened to hear of David's passing. He was a pleasure to work with during our careers in the Forest Service, and both of us had the utmost respect for him. When I picture him, it's always with that great smile of his. Sending our sincere sympathy.
