Dave was like an uncle to me. My deceased brother Calvin Hughes, also a trumpet player, grew up with Dave in Perth Amboy, NJ and was his best friend. Dave's outstanding trumpet solos and collaboration with James Moody and Eddie Jefferson will always stand out in my mind and will provide eternal memories of his unmistakable skills. And most of all, Dave was a kind and caring human being.
