David S. Dougherty

Dave and I were faculty at David Grant Medical Center together. We immediately bonded over our passion for hiking the mountains of California. With Dave´s Drambui and my Cognac mixed together we created the first Yosemite Howler in a very remote spot in Yosemite. Dave was a passionate physician and was excellent at teaching his expansive knowledge to others. I just learned of his death, and I feel a deep sadness and personal loss of one of my favorite people.

We were stationed together at RAF Lakenheath in 1985-86, and we have been searching for you for many years as we lost contact in 1997. Dr. Dougherty gave us a lot of hope when he was treating our son for benign childhood epilepsy. He would be proud to know he has been fully employed for the last 20 years and free of epilepsy for over 30 years. I cannot believe he is gone but know he touched many lives in his short life. Our thoughts go with you as we had no idea of your loss until recently.

Dear Marybeth, Kelly and Theresa. I am so sorry for your loss. I have been searching for David for 15 years periodically. I am an old Air Force nurse that was stationed with David at Minot Regional Hospital, 1980-82. We had a great friendship and unbeatable characters in the Saturday Dungeon and Dragon parties. Dear Dougherty Family:
I was a patient of Dr.Dougherty for several years and I had an ongoing problem that I saw many neurologists for and he was the only doctor who was able to help me. When I tried to thank him, he always made light of it. He was a wonderful doctor and an incredibly nice person and I will never forget him. My thoughts are with you as you go through this difficult time.

I didn't know Mr. Dougherty, but I did know one of his daughters, Kelly. We went to high school together. And knowing you, Kelly, I know that your dad must have been a wonderful man to raise such a wonderful daughter. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

None of you know me, but I was a resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital while David was on staff here. I have many fond memories of his engaging personality and unique teaching style. He served as an exemplary role model for physicians in training. Now that I have matured from student to educator, I often notice reflections of his influence in my own teachings. Like others from LaSalle who have written to you, I did not know David well. It is simply amazing, however, the camaraderie that has developed among a bunch of old guys on the edge of the 40th reunion. David will be missed, acknowledged, toasted to (our version of a seven gun salute), and remembered. My son is at ASU now and surely we should meet next time I am in Tempe.
