David Lee Duncan David Lee "Dave" Duncan of Charlottesville, Virginia, departed this life on Sunday, December 18, 2011, at the University of Virginia Medical Center while in the care and comfort of his family. He was born in Glade Spring, Virginia, on February 27, 1944, the son of Roy and Mae Christy Duncan. The youngest of five children, Dave graduated from Glade Spring High School and attended Emory and Henry College before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1963. A veteran of the Cold War, he served as a sonar technician aboard ballistic missile submarines, completing submarine deterrent patrols, standing sentry beneath the icy waves of the North Atlantic. His sense of duty and patriotism was evident throughout his life and he was a devoted Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served as the local Post Commander, State Vice Commander, and National Aide de Camp. Dave proudly served his community for over 26 years as a Deputy Sheriff for the City of Charlottesville, where he rose to the rank of major and served as Chief Deputy for over 10 years prior to his retirement in 2004. His love and dedication for the job and his colleagues motivated him to continue to serve as a part-time deputy and instructor, which he did up until his death. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Ralph and Robert "Scott" Duncan. He will be truly missed by his friends and family including his three sons, David Lee Duncan Jr. and his wife, Justina Spiegel Duncan, Roy Baker Duncan II and his fiancee, Mary Ann McIvor, and Patrick Sean McEnteggart of Charlottesville; and a granddaughter, Lochlyn Grey Duncan; two sisters, Ann Dillon of Columbia, Tennessee, and Marion Huston of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with many dear friends. Dave will be inurned with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John C. Cullin Post 1827 of the VFW.
