David Val Finlayson completed his earthly journey on April 2, 2024 and travelled to his new adventure joining his father Val, nephew Nathan, and many friends.
He treasured his two children, Charlie and Savannah.
He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 21, 1963 to VaLayne and Val A. Finlayson. He was a loving and fun brother to Cathy (Bret), Dan (Cindy) and Kim (Jeff).
David graduated from University of Utah with a bachelor’s in communications. He earned a degree of Juris Doctor from University of Utah and practiced criminal defense.
He had an adventurous soul. He loved rock climbing, skiing, hiking, kayaking, fly fishing, camping and anything outdoors. He enjoyed these adventures with Charlie, Savy and his many wonderful, like-minded friends. He also had a gift for song writing and playing his guitar.
David had a deep love of mankind and a passion to lift and help those in need. This was evident in his service as an attorney as well as his humanitarian efforts in the Congo and Israel.
“For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:35,36,40
His genuine love will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
Graveside service for family and close friends will be held Tuesday, April 9th at 11am at the Murray City Cemetery. The address is 5490 S Vine St, Murray, UT 84107.

I was very fortunate to work for Dave (and his partner Summer) for several years. They had the most pro-bono clients of any of the attorneys. He definitely led with his heart. Dave was such a unique, beautiful soul. The world is better for him having been a part of it. Miss you, Dave. Glad I’ve had a few visits in my dreams.
Love to all your family and friends.

I found the dragon as you told on the month you gone in Tibet. A temple in the mountains with no roads and signs that I converted its owner when I was 13. I love you.

David was a wonderful human and an incredible advocate. As a family, we are so thankful to have known him. He was a friend who always listened to the suffering of others with no judgment. He often shared stories about his outdoor adventures with his children.
David, Thank you for helping my family and giving us hope. Thank you for caring and advocating for our love ones. Thank you for taking my calls when I had no hope and your kind words gave me hope. You are one of the good...

I’m deeply saddened to hear of David’s death. We knew each other in our early 20’s. What a brilliant, fun, fascinating human being. Deep condolences to his family.

One of the most genuine people I've known, Dave always made me feel like he cared when he asked how I was doing. I enjoyed watching him and others sitting around the office on Friday evenings playing guitar. All around good guy. You will be sincerely missed my friend.

David was always trying to help people. When I worked as a prosecutor or a defense attorney you knew he cared about his client. Like another person stated. He was an institution in the criminal defense system. While gone his mark on the system will continue.
